MYKA

I gaze out of the window again, seeing the figures behind the trees clearer now, multiple of them. They're just a dark blur in the speed, running along the car, jumping and stretching out smoothly.

"Dangerous? So there's something you Lycans are afraid of?"

I can see Lucien frown at my question.

Asshole.

"No. We're the most dangerous species," he answers, unable to hide the irritation in his voice.

"Then why do you feel the need to have bodyguards running through the woods?"

"Rival packs can be problem, other Lycans," Milo answers shortly. I want to ask him how many there are - if they got some real enemies - but something in his tone tells me that he won't elaborate further on that.

So instead I observe him in the mirror, looking for any emotion that'll give something away. A hint, a clue, anything. But his pokerface is solid, eyes stay neutral as they focus on the road ahead.

Milo is a looker, I'll give him that, but a strange looker. His sharp face almost strikes me as androgynous save for the subtle stubble over his jaw. You can immediately tell that he isn't human, with that dark hair in contrast to those intense golden eyes. No human looks like that.

He might not be an asshole to the same degree as Mr Lycan Douche, but there's still something off about him. Something hidden, like a storm brewing beneath the surface. A wolf hidden in sheep's clothing. He is the one who first stalked my sister and brought his friend to kidnap me, after all. I need to keep my eyes on him too.

That thought makes me glance over at Dinah. She looks startled, her hazel eyes wide open as she tracks the movements of the shadows running through the forest next to us. I can tell that reality is catching up to her and hitting her over the head, the chilling fact that we've been taken by real predators - beasts. We're in their power.

This time it's my turn to squeeze her hand.

"So in whose territory are we now?" I ask again, strangely curious about their dynamics. The more I know the better, and the bigger the chance to get the hell out of here.

"We're in no man's land right now, everyone can trespass here," Milo answers calmly. "We'll soon reach the first junction where the territories start."

"Is it far?"

"Not really. We'll be home in thirty minutes."

Home.

That word hits me like a gut punch, right in the abdomen, making it hard to breathe.

He said it so easily, so naturally.

Home.

Mom is home. Mom who just lost her two daughters. Mom who's only got Levi left. Mom who's now forced raise him all alone because these assholes caught a scent.

Tears start burning in my eyes, not the tears of saddness but tears of rage. Everything is so damn unfair and it's making me furious.

I try blinking the angry tears away, using the sleeve of my sweater to dry my eyes. Keep it together, Myka. I can't cry now, I can't waste my energy. I need to suppress it and keep my head cool until I've figured out a way to get us out of here, away from them.
