Dusk settled across the sky, with a slight breeze blowing at Frisk's hair. Everyone was standing there on the cliff side staring out at the blazing sun as it stared back. But Frisk felt something deep inside, like he still had something else he needed to do. It was eating at him. Frisk sighed softly and turned back around, he needed to go back, it was almost calling his name.Frisk started making his way back into the underground almost in a daze. He kept walking blanking out until he reached the door to the ruins. It was wide open and the darkness yawned at him. He continued, walking back towards the very beginning where his journey began. Finally he reached the archway, the great opening to the hopeful sight of the start. The golden yellow of the buttercups was bright in the glowing light shining on them. There, Asriel was on his knees looking at the flowers with a cloudy glaze over his eyes and an unreadable expression.
Frisk slowly walked over to Asriel and knelt next to him, he hesitantly placed his hand on his shoulder. Asriel turned his head slowly and sighed. It was quiet and a question burned in Frisks mind, how was Asriel still himself? He had said before it wouldn't be long but now he is still normal. Frisk contemplated asking and then decided he should.
"Asriel...You're still you, right?" Frisk said with empathy to his voice and a concerned look.
Asriel turned his head slowly, "Oh-uh right, Frisk I was walking and then...there was a figure. It was almost hard to look at them though, like it was always blurry and then there it was, a monster soul only it was.. different".
Asriel shook his head, "I don't know who or what it was but it gave me it, it said something I couldn't understand and was gone."
Frisk nodded slowly, the story was strange and a little intriguing. What was it that Asriel saw exactly and how would that thing had gotten a monster soul. He shook his head deciding that at the time it wasn't important, the only thing that mattered was that Asriel was fine and wouldn't turn back into the thing he feared, which was himself.
"Are you alright?" Frisk asked with worry in his voice but it was calm and collected.
Asriel cocked his head and stroked a flower petal in between his fingers, "I-I don't really know, everything is so strange and- no everything will be okay"
A bright smile spread across Asriel's face and he stood up, "Everything will be okay! I just know it! Frisk, I want to leave, I want to see the surface," he had a determined smile and his lime green eyes glinted brightly.
Frisk broke out a small smile and also got up.
Asriel started running out of the room and called back to Frisk as he went, "C'mon Frisk! I'll race you to the surface!"
Frisk started running after the excited monster goat running past confused monsters and the echo flowers which echoed their excitement back at them.
But Frisk could feel something ever since he started talking to Asriel, no doubt it was her. He could feel a dark cold sensation behind him and it brought a thought to Frisk's mind. What he could do for her, he didn't want her to be stuck with him forever, he wanted to save her and have her live a happy life like everyone else. But how?
After a long time of running Asriel and Frisk both leaped out of the wide opening where the barrier once stood and blocked the path. Asriel turned to Frisk panting.
"I think we-" he panted "tied!" He put his hands on his knees and kept a large smile pointed at Frisk.
Frisk nodded in agreement and also took a minute to catch his breath as they were both running for a while at full speed.
Frisk turned towards the horizon, the sun only had a sliver left that was poking out above the trees. The nightly colors of purple and dark blue were swirling through the sky and turned darker the farther from the sun. The small stars glinted brightly in the late summer sky with the cool breeze from earlier that slowly made his hair rise and fall like waves. In the distance they could hear a cackle of a familiar laughter.
Asriel and Frisk shared an excited glance and both made their way down the path to see the two skele-bros.
Papyrus had a proud expression and was man-handling a human under his arm.
Sans stood there in front of Papyrus with a wide smile and his hands in his pockets.
"Heya bro," Sans said, it seems he had just gotten there like Asriel and Frisk had.
"NYEHEHEHEH! I have found a human Sans! Can you believe it!" Papyrus exclaimed and looked down at the human proudly.
Frisk laughed and so did Asriel. Sans then walked up to Papyrus.
"Hey bro, wanna go look for some more humans, I know a spot where a bunch hang out, or so I've heard," Sans cocked his head and winked at Papyrus.
Papyrus gasped, "Absolutely, I would love to brother!"
The two skeletons then started to make their way down a separate path on the mountain with the human Papyrus was carrying still had a shocked expression like they didn't exactly know how to react.
Asriel turned to Frisk and giggled, then they started hearing footsteps from the forest. Curiously, both turned to see Toriel emerge from the dense woods with a soft smile. Her eyes widened and tears filled her eyes at the sight of Asriel. She ran up to him and took him into a loving embrace. Asriel smiled and hugged back tightly. Frisk stood there and smiled at the wholesome and adorable moment he got to witness. After a minute Toriel stood and wiped a tear away.
"Asriel, my child, I'm so glad that you're back," She had a joyful smile and hope in her eyes.
"I have just come from an abandoned village, there wasn't much of the ruins that was intact but I have found a temporary home for us, please follow me, my children".
Asriel nodded with a bright and soft smile and followed Toriel as she turned back towards the darkened woods into the path she had opened. Frisk also followed Toriel but not as closely as Asriel was, the feeling, the cold dark feeling had grown stronger. Frisk wanted to find time to talk but it seemed he might not be able to tonight. He could feel her displeasure burning into the back of his head, even though he couldn't see her anymore, he could tell she was glaring daggers at him.
