*Macy
I sat by the hospital bed as my sister was slowly awaiting her death. The doctor said she had maybe a few hours. She sat with her newborn daughter saying she loved her because soon she knew she would leave both of us. I was too lost in my thoughts when she turned to me. She spoke too me in a soft, weak tone.
"You have to take care of her", she said," she can't be alone she. Won't be like us. We had no parents. At least she has a chance. You have to take care of her."She looked into my eyes, but she didn't just look into my eyes. It felt like she was looking into my soul. Then she said,"You have to."
"Okay, I'll try."
"I love you so much," I cried.
"I love you too,"she said as she held me gently comforting me in her loving arms.
That's when I heard the heart monitor let out one last long beep. That beep that felt like I had lost everything , like I was climbing a steep hill and the rope I was holding onto vanished. I let my world unravel around me only to be put together by the cry of my sister's new born baby's cry. That was the only thing that put me back together. It let me see that I have one thing left and she was my hope. I may have lost everything else but I refused lose her. So many I was a 15 year old orphan who had it hard but I was going to make it through for her. I thought a for little while while holding my niece and realized that she didn't have a name. Carly? No. Sarah? No. Lauren? No. Then I looked into her sea green eyes brunette hair and thought of the perfect name. Madison Grace Smith. Grace was her mother's name. I knew to take care of her I would always need something to remember the wish her mother made when she died just to remind me to keep.
They had discharged the baby a few days ago so I was free to leave I went home well my mother's old house it was paid for so I could stay there for as long as I wanted without having to pay. The baby woke up when we went to the store. People were staring at me. They probably thought the baby was mine. I walked over to the baby section of the store. It seemed very vacant. It is never vacant. Something is off about this. I picked up the formula some baby clothes ,some clothes for me, and lots of groceries. My sister had left me a lot of money apparently. I was to lost in my thoughts to see the boy beside the vegetables until he looked at Madison. He said that she was cute.
"She's not mine," I tell him,"she is my dead sister's."
He gave me an unexpected hug and a shoulder to cry on.
It was then that it hit me. The epidemic has taken everyone from me I slowly backed away and asked
"Who have you lost? "
He simply replied,"Everyone."
We eventually started talking about our lives and our pains and troubles, and I learned his name was Jordan I eventually asked hum if he had somewhere to call home he said he didn't I then proceeded to ask him if he wanted to come live with us for awhile. He replied
"Yes."
