Virgil's POV
I wiped my clammy hands on my jeans, trying to stuff down the feeling that was welling up in my chest. I was not about to allow my anxiety ruin my night. I still couldn't believe that I actually had a date with all 3 of my crushes! A giddy smile made its way to my lips despite my best efforts to seem cool.
Shaking myself of my thoughts, I looked to Patton, who was smiling fondly at me. I love it when he smiles. It lights up his whole face and it feels safe when he looks at me like that.
"How're you feeling, V?" Patton asked. He never fully shook the habit of calling me V, even though he knows my name. He tends to switch between Virge, V, and various pet names. I took a moment to take stock of myself, hyper aware of the unease pooling in my gut.
I never really got the phrase "butterflies in my stomach," but right now I think I understand. It felt akin to a storm brewing, tumultuous waves of emotion crashing against my ribcage. It was so foreign, yet almost familiar. Like a doppelganger of my anxiety, a near replica, but something was off. It was like amidst all of this chaos, amidst the hurricane residing beneath the surface, there was light. It filled me with warmth like a gentle ray of sunlight gracing my skin, I mean, look at me. I'm waxing poetic about this unfamiliar feeling like I'm Shakespeare or something. Despite the fear in my soul I felt light.
"I'm feeling pretty good, Pat," I informed him, my smile, albeit nervous, was evident in my voice. Patton, predictably, beamed, turning forward to engage Roman in conversation.
Logan turned in his seat to make eye contact with me. "I am glad that you are feeling an optimal level of joy, Virgil. It... makes me happy to know that we make you happy." I gave him a lopsided grin, feeling more sunlight overtake me, beginning to drown out my fear. I was so lucky to have such sweet people for boyfriends. A small smile graced Logan's face, and I soaked in the gentle affection emanating from him. I reached forward in my seat and squeezed his hand, a gesture he returned.
At that moment, Roman pulled into a parking lot, putting the car in park and turning the keys in the ignition, stopping the car. He was positively glowing as he faced us, excitement lighting up his eyes like specks of blazing mahogany, a fire, a passion dancing in his irises. The skin around his eyes crinkled adorably with his wide, jubilant grin. My stomach did flips at the sheer joy in his gaze, feeling incredibly grateful to be one of the causes of such unadulterated happiness. "Are my loves prepared for a magnificent night of romance?" We all gave affirmations. "Fantastic! Without further adieu, follow me!" With that, he exited the car.
Logan, Patton, and I followed suit, stepping out of the car and onto the cracked pavement, loose pebbles of stone making it sound like we were on gravel. I wrung my hands, not wanting to leave them by my side, needing to do something to let out the energy that the nerves was building up inside of me. I saw Roman grab a picnic basket out of the back of the car. So that's what we're doing
We walked on well-trodden land, trees framing my field of vision. "Wow, this is... beautiful," I commented softly. Roman turned his head with a fond smile that softened his features.
"Oh, just you wait, Robert Downer Jr. You haven't seen anything yet." I loved when he called me nicknames, because I could feel just how differently they were said than when we first became partners on that English project. As if on cue, we turned a corner, and I couldn't hold in my gasp.
In front of me was a large clearing, the slowly setting sun visible. In the center, a gazebo stood proudly, fairy lights decorating the supports and around the top in contrast to the increasingly darkening sky like stars. A big, classic red and white plaid picnic blanket lay in the center. A faint breeze graced us, a serene mood settling into the space.
I faced my boyfriends with wide eyes, astonished by the sight in front of me. Logan and Patton sported similar looks, and Roman was standing, a large grin on his face, his chest puffing out proudly. "This is magnificent," breathed Logan, adjusting his glasses. Patton and I nodded our agreement.
"I'm glad that you enjoy it! I did put substantial effort into making this," Roman bragged not unkindly. With his free arm, he gestured towards the gazebo. "Well, shall we?" The three of us nodded, making our way to the clearing.
Roman made quick work of setting up the picnic, pulling out bags of food and plastic plates. We all made ourselves at home on the blanket, sitting in a circle.
The night passed quickly, jokes flying about in our chaotic yet comfortable conversation, a happy glow in my chest all the while. Soon- too soon, the evening began to come to a close, the sun now almost completely set and the food gone.
I looked around me at the almost magical scene in front of me, the night sky and the pleasantly cool weather, my boyfriends' smiling faces and an unfamiliar feeling of pure contentment settling in me.
A yawn escaped unbidden from my throat, signaling to the others that the night was waning. Logan stated, "If we want to remain conducive to a proper sleep schedule, we should probably adjourn." God, I loved his formal speech patterns.
"Yeah," a yawn, "probably," I agreed. Roman and Patton also voiced their affirmations and we began picking up the picnic.
Patton gave us all big hugs when we finished, his love for physical affection showing through his actions. "You guys are the best boyfriends anyone could ever ask for," Patton declared brightly, albeit tiredly.
"Ahem, same to you, Patton." Logan adjusted his tie as he spoke.
"Love you too, Pat," Roman responded. Shit, do i have to respond too? What do I say?
"Uh, th-thanks, Pat." Great. Stuttering. Patton just beamed at me like he had at the other two, unbothered by my slip up.
...................................................
The ride back to my home was soothing, and I let the conversation act as white noise as I leaned my head against the window, drifting in a half asleep limbo.
Patton shook me gently, a fond smile on his face when we reached my place. I opened my eyes. "Huh?" I asked groggily.
"We're here," Roman replied. Oh. I rubbed my eyes and looked around the car.
"So, I guess this is goodbye for now?" I asked, not really sure how to proceed.
"For now indeed, my sweet," Roman confirmed. The four of us stepped out of the car, and I gave each of them a hug.
"Goodnight, Star," Logan said softly. I mumbled a shy goodnight in return.
"Bye, V!" Patton chirped as he squeezed me tightly in the hug.
"Until we speak again," Roman said as he kissed my hand after pulling away from the hug, causing a bright blush to decorate my cheeks. He was so courteous.
"Bye, guys. I had a lot of fun tonight," I murmured, still not having fully shook myself from sleep. They concurred, and waved to me as I walked away. Soft conversation picked up between the three as I approached the door.
"Bye, Virge!" they called. I smiled at them one more time before I entered the house. It was then that I realized how tired I was. Exhaustion tugged at my bones, making my movements sluggish. My eyes drooped. I laid down in my bed and was asleep before my head even hit the pillow.
