The next morning, just as the school bus arrived, with Jane and Walter thinking all of their children had gotten onto the bus heading to school, Kali snuck out the back door and instead was heading on over the Jessica's place.
The adventure girl knew she could get in trouble for skipping school, but knew that this was for a much more important cause and it was worth it to skip a few hours of school.
Kali arrived at the house just as Jessie was sneaking out past her dad who was working in the barn. The girls cautiously looked around to make sure no one was watching them then came into the shed to find Prancer laying on some blankets, not looking too good.
Kali frowned upon meeting her eyes on poor Prancer. She hated seeing her friend like this.
"Got anything for him to eat, Jess?" Kali asked Jessie, while she herself had a little bit of hay she had found in her hand. It wasn't much but it would have to do. Prancer had to eat.
Jessie took out her backpack and dumped it in front of Prancer, revealing a bunch of Xmas cookies for him to eat.
"This isn't a very healthy breakfast" She said, frowning slightly.
Kali sighed, then told Prancer while giving him the bit of hay she had. "But it'll have to do until we can get you some more hay"
Prancer hmmed before eating the hay Kali gave him out of her hand.
"And you did eat our little trees" Jessie gave a bit of a scowling towards Prancer, before telling Kali something had been eating her family's little chestnut trees, knowing it was Prancer.
"Hey, can you blame a reindeer for being hungry? There's nothing better to eat here" Prancer said to Jessie even though she couldn't understand him.
"We have much better food at the North Pole" Prancer stated, before he began breathing heavily looking very weak. The girls noticed.
"Oh, Prancer," Jessie frowned while petting him. "You're getting worse and worse"
Kali looked at the reindeer, fighting hard to keep back tears. She hated seeing Prancer like this and she and Jessie knew they just couldn't let him suffer.
"If we don't do something soon, things are gonna look really bad, Jess" Kali turned to her friend telling her in a very serious manner, worrying for Prancer's sake.
"We're going for some help" Jessie said to Prancer before she and Kali got up to leave, promising Prancer they'd be back with some help.
While walking on the way to their destination, Jessie told Kali about what she finally found out what was going on between her dad and Aunt Sarah. Afraid he would be unable to provide for her, John told Jessie he was thinking about sending her away to live with Aunt Sarah for a little while.
This broke Kali's heart, feeling really bad for Jessie.
"I don't want you to leave, Jess" She said to her friend.
"I don't either" Jessie said, telling Kali she was planning on running away if her Aunt Sarah came for her.
Kali frowned. She really didn't want Jessie to leave and she really didn't want her to run away if it came to that. But the girls decided not to discuss it right now.
Soon they found who they were looking for. The town's veterinarian, Dr. Orel Benton, who was at the moment checking over some farm pigs when the girls came running towards him.
"Doctor Benton! Doctor Benton!" They called, rushing over.
"Whatever it is can wait til tomorrow" He told the girls, clearly showing to be not in the mood right now. "I've been up all night"
