"Please let them go", Xiao Zhan screamed. He was being held back by his King's soldiers, their elongated nails digging into the skin on his shoulders. He was being forced to watch his parent's execution. His king cast him a side glance.
"PLEASE, I'll- I'll do anything!"
Xiao Zhan has tears streaming down his face and sat there helplessly watch the executioner approach his parents with an axe. His parents were bound by silver shackles and were silently hugging each other while looking at Xiao Zhan. Their hearts ached for their little boy and the hardships they knew he had to face in order to make out of here alive. They knew they would die soon and leave their only child alone in this cruel world.
"I love you, my son. You must be brave, ok? You must fight to survive and make it out of here alive then only can we rest peacefully," Xiao Zhan's mother said, her voice laced with pain. She glanced at her husband. Her husband looked at her for a long while before nodding his head.
Xiao Zhan's screams got louder as he begged the indifferent king to have mercy on his parents. The King watched the scene unfold before him. How pathetic. They were just ants to him. Small, insignificant, and helpless. The King let out a fry laugh, "This is what you get for committing treason."
The king nodded towards the executioner. The executioner slowly approached the couple, dragging his axe behind him. Xiao Zhan's father gave his wife a last look, whispering his last I love you into her ear, before setting his gaze on his son and then the executioner.
"Mum! Dad! Please don't go! I'm sorry! Just please don't go! Don't leave me..."
His screams echoed around the courtyard.
"Someone please shut him up!"
The king was growing frustrated. This was only supposed to take an hour. He was hungry and knew his wife would give him hell if he got home late for dinner. He felt that his wife should be here, with him so she could see the execution and approve of the way he handled things. This was his wife's sister's execution after all. The last thing he needed was for her to nag him about the proper way of beheading someone after the deed had been done.
A soldier kicked Xiao Zhan in his stomach and pushed him on the floor. Xiao Zhan groaned and rolled over on his side, clutching his stomach and spitting out blood. His father's eyes darkened. "How could you do this to your own nephew! Madam Yu couldn't even be here to witness her own sister's execution. What trash!"
"NOW!", shouted Xiao Zhan's mother.
His father broke his silver shackles and rushed towards the soldiers holding Xiao Zhan. With one sweep he sent all of them flying to the other end of the courtyard. He Xiao Zhan up and tugged him out of the courtyard and dragged him towards the woods.
His mother got up from where she was sitting and attempted to buy them some time by distracting the King. Although she was quite a strong wolf-siren hybrid, the king was stronger. It was not long before he overpowered her and sank his teeth into her neck, killing her.
Xiao Zhan and his father were almost under the forest's cover. Xiao Zhan heard his mother whimper and glance behind him. His heart broke when he saw his mother's lifeless on the ground. His legs stopped working. He could not think rationally, he just wanted to go back and hug his mother's lifeless corpse and scream until his throat was raw so that the heavens would hear him and send her back to him. His father kept pulling him. He never once turned around because he knew if he saw his wife he would break down. His first priority was to save his son or all of this would be in vain. He could grieve later.
They ran for half an hour under the dense cover of the forest. Xiao Zhan's father was in his wolf form. Xiao Zhan ran alongside him. He couldn't turn into his true wolf form because of the siren blood flowing through him but he was just as strong and just as fast. His father stopped and turned back into his human form. He sniffed the air and looked around to make sure no one had caught up to them yet.
"Zhan, I need you to listen to me very carefully. You need to run and get out of here. You must leave the Red Moon pack and never return. If the King ever lays his hands on you, you will die. You must head east for a week. You must move as quickly as possible and be as cautious as you can. After a week, you will reach the Moonlight pack's territory. You will be safe there. Tell their Alpha I sent you. Never look back. Never come back to this horrid place. Do you understand?"
Tears fell from Xiao Zhan's eyes. His voice shook.
"Wh- What about you dad?"
His father smiled and placed his hand on his son's cheek to wipe away his tears.
"I can't go with you. I have to go back to your mother. You will be fine my son. You are brave and stronger than you know."
He pulled his son in for a hug, one last time. He could hear the shouts of the King's soldiers in the distance. Xiao Zhan needed to leave.
"I love you, my son. Now go."
His father pushed him away and his eyes darkened as he changed back into his wolf form and ran off towards the soldiers. Xiao Zhan watched his father leave. He didn't want to leave without his parents but he knew he had no other choice. He didn't have much time. He turned around, covered up his scent, and fled eastwards.
His wolf howled in agony at the loss of his mother. He ran faster. He felt his father's lifeforce disappear. His wolf howled louder and thunderstruck nearby. It had started to rain. Tears, blood, and rain mixed together as Xiao Zhan ran as fast as he could in the dark night; his soft whimpers barely audible over the booming of thunder.
