I lead Kayla to an empty room in the huge building some crazy rich kid had rented for this party. "Alec," Kayla began, but I cut her off.
"Kay, I love you, you've always been an amazing friend, but I don't think us being together is going to work out."
"We can make it work Al, I know we can."
"Kayla, you don't understand. The things I saw when I was gone–"
"What Alec? What? How are those things going to get in the way of us?"
"I'm sorry Kayla, we're over." I head towards the door.
"Fuck you, Alec. You have everything, you're famous, you're smart, the fucking SAF general likes you. And here I am failing all my classes, the general hates me, and no one knows who the hell I am. But you're too busy being so fucking perfect to do anything with or for anyone but yourself." I turn around and face Kayla.
"You think I like everyone watching me all the damn time? You think I like it? Dammit, Kayla, you don't understand anything. Being in the spotlight all the time, coming back from a supposedly heroic act, I barely know who I am anymore. I'd do anything to be just another student."
Kayla scoffs and brushes past me to the door. I stare after her, she's been my closest friend for years, I wish we had never started anything and that we could go back to being friends. I miss her.
