Chapter 1

Two months later.

Gabe lay in a hospital bed wrapped in gauze from head to toe. He had been here in the hospital ward in Germany for the last two weeks. Early one morning on patrols, his Humvee ran over a landmine, killing two of his fellow platoon members and severely injuring him in the process. After he was found, he was immediately flown to a military hospital in Germany. For the last two weeks, the only thing that worried him was not how long it would take him to recover but he had no way to write to the little girl that had got him through so many long days.

After receiving Molly's first letter, he wrote the little girl every day telling her all the events of that day, but not going into too much detail, and every day for the last two months, he received a letter from her. Molly even sent him a picture of her and her mother. He carried the picture with him everywhere he went and he was surprised it survived the blast.

The little girl looked like a spitting image of her mother; long chestnut brown hair and wild green eyes. He could see the shadows in her mother's eyes and no matter how hard she tried, the woman couldn't hide the black circles under her eyes. Her mother looked like she hadn't slept in weeks but she was still beautiful. From the looks of their clothes, he knew they were hand-me-downs. Every time he looked at the picture, it reminded him so much of his life in foster care. The first time he had brand new clothes was after his joined the Army; he bought them with his first check.

His last letter from the little girl talked about the new teddy bear she had received for her birthday. He had smiled when he had read that she received the bear. He had made damn sure it was sent to her. He had wrote her back telling her that little girls should have plenty of teddy bears so he had sent her that one for her birthday. The next day, the blast occurred and he hadn't been able to write her since.

"Lieutenant Wilson, I have a letter for you." A nurse said as she walked over to where he was laying.

Finally a letter from Molly, he thought. It had been two long weeks since he had heard from the little girl.

"Would you like me to read it to you?" The nurse asked.

Gabe nodded not trusting his voice. The nurse pulled the white chair that was beside his bed and opened the letter.

                        Dear Mr. Gabe,

It's been a while since you wrote me. Mommy said that you were probably busy. We had to move again. I don't like my new school. Some kids make fun of me because of the clothes I wear. I asked mommy if she could buy me some new ones so I wouldn't get made fun of but mommy said she didn't have the money. When I grow up, I will buy my mommy new clothes. She needs them too. At night when we have supper, she makes me eat but she doesn't eat with me. Why do you think that is? When I ask her she tells me she already ate. I wasn't supposed to write you but I wanted you to know where we are now. Every night when I get ready for bed, I pray you would come and help mommy. She says my daddy is trying to take me away from her and that's why we move all the time. Oh no, I have to go now. If mommy sees me writing you, she might get mad.

                                                            Molly

The nurse wiped a tear from her eye as she finished the letter. Gabe knew she wanted to know why he had received this letter but the look on his face told her not to ask.
