This is just something that I've been playing around with. Going to post the prologue and the first chapter to see what kind of response I get from it. Not sure if I'm going to continue it or not right now but let me know what you think of it so far. This story is a little different from what I've been writing and with that being said, I'll shut up and let you guys read. Please enjoy!

Unexpected Letters

Gabe Wilson stepped out of the blistering desert wind and into the barracks he's called home for the last two years. Barracks his ass, he along with fifty other soldiers lived in a huge tent. There was nothing like having dirt floors and fifty other roommates but it really didn't bother him. This was as close to a family as he ever had. Moving from foster home to foster home, Gabe rejoiced the day he turned eighteen and enlisted in the Army. At least the military gave him a purpose and that family bond he had always searched for.

Stepping out of some of his gear, Gabe sat down on the cot he called his bed. Just six more months and he would be out of this God forsaken place, he thought. He was counting down the days and prayed his orders wouldn't get changed. He would much rather live on a base in the states than live through the blistering days and cold nights of the desert. He desperately wanted something in his life that was consistent, even if it was the weather.

A deep voice brought him out of his thoughts.

"Lieutenant Wilson?"

"Here sir." Gabe stood up and saluted the man who was asking for him.

The man saluted back and handed him an envelope. Gabe looked down, confused at the letter. For the last two years, not once had he received anything in the mail from anyone.

Gabe sat back down on his cot and opened the envelope. Unfolding the letter, he noticed the handwriting was that of a child's.

            Hello,

My name is Molly and I am seven years old. My teacher wanted us to write a letter to soldiers to say thanks for all the work you are doing. Thank you! My mommy told me that you are the reason I sleep safely in my bed at night. I'm supposed to also tell you some stuff about me. I am in the second grade but me and my mommy move around a lot. Mommy says it's to keep be safe but I don't know why. Mommy won't tell me. I have a friend named George. He's my teddy bear. I love teddy bears. I hope you can write me back. My teacher said you might. Well, I have to go to music class now.

                                                            Molly

Gabe carefully folded the letter back up and reached under his cot for the box he used as a small safe. He would write Molly back but what plagued him was why this little girl had to run and what was she running away from? With that thought, he pulled out some paper and started to write to the little girl.

Gabe told her all about the pink sunrises and the golden sunsets. This one little girl had touched something inside him with so few words but he wasn't sure what it was. Gabe had a feeling he was about to make friends with the little girl and God forbid if any harm would come her way...
