LILY KINGSLEY
Sitting in McGonagall's office is not how I wanted to start my first day of term. I hadn't eaten yet, I was late for class and not to mention it's only half past eight.
"You two need to get past this and stop acting like children."
I hear a scoff from next to me and my eyes roll. What a twat.
I don't look to my left, but if I were to I know exactly what i'd see. A platinum blonde haired boy sulking with his arms crossed and a scowl laced across his face.
"Mr Malfoy, that includes your taunting." I watch as McGonagall gives me the side eye. She likes me, thank god. I'd be in so much more shit if she didn't.
"Professor! She-"
"I don't want to hear it." She cuts him off and folds her arms. "Squabbling in the hallway is not acceptable, especially from two students in the same house!"
"Barely, she's always hanging around with those Gryfindorks." As the mumbled words fall from his lips, my head snaps to face him for the first time since we entered the room.
"Just fuck off will you? Have you ever considered the reason I don't stick around with anyone in this house is because you're all arseholes?"
"Clearly you're in the right house then." he smirks slightly, knowing for a fact that he's winding me up.
"Miss Kingsley! Never use those foul words in front of me again. Do you understand?"
I slowly turn back to McGonagall and lower my head. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't ashamed of letting my temper take over in front of someone I respect so dearly. "Sorry."
"Mr Malfoy, get to lesson. Miss Kingsley, stay here whilst I decide on your punishment."
I grumble and stoop lower in my chair. Malfoy stands and pulls his bag over his shoulder with pride.
I look up at him through my lashes and his eyes meet mine. His fucking smirk. I hate it.
"See you at class, Kingsley."
He leaves the room and McGonagall leans against her desk.
"Lily, you have to start controlling your temper. You are such level headed young lady, yet the moment Mr Malfoy is involved, you fly off the handle."
I don't look at her. I can't, I'm too ashamed. This isn't the first time I've been in this same position having this same conversation.
"I hate him Miss. I try and stay away from him but he's always there."
"Go to class. You'll have detention with Flitwick tonight. That way you can catch up on what you've missed whilst you've been in here." She turns her head to the door and signals for me to leave.
I stand up slowly and resist the urge to tuck my hair behind my ears. I don't want her to see the look of shame on my face, but she most definitely already knows.
Just before my hand grabs the door, I hear the words that have always been unspoken by McGonagall.
"We both know that Gryfindor is the house you should belong to, but you were sorted into Slytherin, and that can't be changed. You have strong traits of both. Good and bad. But they will both work in your favour, I'm sure of it. Just don't be led astray by silly boys and irrelevant opinions.
I hate to punish you Lily. Please don't make me do it again."
I nod with a small smile, and then continue to leave.
At times, I'm a Slytherin that's for sure. I'll bite back if you try me, I can't keep my opinions to myself and I certainly can't hold my temper. But i'd like to think that i'm still kind. I care about what people think and want to help anyone that needs it. My friends are important to me, and it will always be that way. So why am I in a house that is associated with mean, cold hearted idiots? It's a question I'm not sure I want to know the answer to.
I don't realise that my jaw is clenched until I reach the door to Charms and take a deep breath. I close my eyes and remember that what just happened isn't important. It's just Malfoy being a dick as usual.
As the large door creaks open, the whole class looks over at me. Of course I choose to join when the whole room is in silence.
"Ah Miss Kingsley. Nice of you to show."
I direct my eyes over to the professor sat behind his desk marking papers. "Essay on my desk and take a seat. We're reading through page 856. In Silence."
Flitwick isn't all that bad of a teacher. He can take a joke and have a laugh, but when he's in a shit mood, we all know about it. And the mood he is in today is definitely shit.
I reach into my bag and dig around for the essay that was set a week ago. Thank god I sat and did it with Neville on the train ride over to Hogwarts, otherwise I would be well and truly fucked. I place it on the pile in front of him and head to the back of the class where Harry and Hermione are sat.
"What happened?" Hermione whispers, looking at me intently.
"Nothing, but I swore at Malfoy so I've got detention with Flitwick tonight." I grumble, slipping in the seat next to Harry.
"What did he say?" Harry asked. He leant forwards towards me, but that must have meant he was blocking Hermione's view as she smacks him back slightly with a tut.
"The usual; I don't belong in Slytherin but then he proceeds to think i'm a bitch so maybe I do." I huff as I flick through the pages of my charms book trying to find what we were supposed to be reading.
"I'm sorry Lils. He sucks. But thanks for standing up for us in the corridor. It means a lot." Harry sympathetically smiles.
"It does, but Lily, you shouldn't be getting yourself into trouble for us. Malfoy loves to get a reaction and you give it to him. I know it's hard not to, but don't fuel his fire."
Hermione is mostly always right, and she's right now, too.
"I know, I'm sorry." I mumble, looking down at my text book. I'm a page away from the right one when Hermione grabs my hand.
"But thank you Lils. It really does mean a lot."
We're interrupted when Flitwick breaks through what is meant to be silence.
"Mr. Malfoy, where is your essay?" He asks, peering over his glasses at the Blonde sitting with his posse at the front.
I don't hear his response, but it's definitely not good.
"Very well then. Join me in my detention after classes tonight."
