chapter one: how bout a beer?

the kooks know, the cops know, the carreras certainly know - everybody knows the pogues are constantly running into trouble. but its just by their nature, their blood runs different- their veins track constant adrenaline through their bodies while they're together. its a crazy thing the kooks can only dream of achieving alone, they crave it now they've lost it- even though everybody knows it's bound to cause the worst kind of problems eventually - death, heartbreak, loss, etc.

now everyone knows that john b is dead. they ran into the wall they've built and it toppled down- metaphorically of course. they were hunting for gold, 400 million in gold in fact. its well known that the royal merchant sunk with all that gold on it, people have been searching for it to no give- rumour has it john b, jj and pope found it, and john b got killed for it. whatever happened he's definitely dead- his body was found on the beach by an early morning jogger, a group of young partiers were around and saw him stop, when they walked over they got their phones out and the news was spread in an instant- pictures too.

it wasn't too gruesome, he drowned- but everyone saw, it was sent round with no message attached so people opened it not realising what they were clicking on - its the kinda thing that people remember exactly what they were doing when they heard. rumours of who could've murdered him were spread, at first it was jj, then pope, then jj again, it swapped around a lot- kiara's father was brought in at one point because like many things, the whole of outer banks was aware of the mess the pogues caused of kiara carrera- or more specifically the mess jj made of her, but of course john b is not jj so that rumour didn't really last long. plus, it was ruled out as an accidentally drowning- supposedly he was surfing or something, even though there wasn't a board found.

pope's father, heyward and sheriff peterkin decided to do his funeral since nobody else was around to do so, john b's father- big john, died at sea while also trying to find the royal merchant- and his mother has never been around. his uncle t was supposed to be there for him, he is- was his legal guardian but he was always out of town. he didn't even respond to the funeral invite.

as she walked into the funeral of her ex-best friend kiara's body shakes. her father watches her as she walks beside him, her arm on the other side linked with her mother. 'are you cold?' he asks as her shoulders shake. its the middle of autumn- but it isn't that cold, even if it was cold all three of them know she's not shaking because of the soft breeze whipping her figure.

but she nods, smiling weakly at him, he pulls his jacket off himself and places it round her shoulders and wraps an arm around her. anna carerra smiles at her husband as the warmth envelopes their "little" girl.

it isn't long before some kook couple has tugged them into conversation, but kiara stopped paying notice- instead she focuses her attention on the crowds gathering around them. almost all of outer banks is here, the kooks hate the pogues, but there sure are a lot of them here. then she notices two boys stood to the side looking over the sea she stops looking, she's found what she wants.

she shudders more than she originally was when she remembers it used to be a three, and when she was there it was an eight- sarah, kie, john b, rafe, topper, kelce, pope and jj were the bane of the kook-pogue rivalry, despite being brought up to hate the opposing side they found themselves mingling after kiara had stumbled upon her love for pogue-style adventure and a certain blonde boy.

her gaze is ripped away from the two boys when a different pair of arms envelope her from behind, this time they belong to sarah cameron, 'kie' she sighs into kiara's hair, 'what are you doing?'

kie turns herself round so she can hug sarah back, 'nothing?' she replies to her dress-clad friend.

'i saw you watching him.' sarah whispers softly, they hold eachother as if their lives depend on it until they hear a chuckle from their side.
