Annabeth ran forward sword-swinging only to be stopped as a familiar twinge took hold of her stomach. Her eyes widened and she ducked to avoid a spray of poison, cursing as another cramp stabbed through her abdomen. She gritted her teeth, her cramps had been getting steadily worse for months. Heaving herself back up she charged again, she wouldn't let cramps be the thing that kept her incapacitated.
Annabeth stood in the cabin where Clarise had ordered them, no, assigned them to sleep. She sighed and stared out the porthole out across the sea. She was still processing what luke had done. He had tried to kill them for god's sake! Yet what Percy had said he let us go too easily. Stuck with her, he was right she knew. Some part of her wondered if Luke had set up the monster doughnut knowing they might get captured by Clarisse.
"Luke" she whispered to herself "Where did it go wrong? Why are you doing this?" the waves held no answer and she felt tears slipping down her cheeks. She buried her face in her hands and tried to muffle the sound of her crying. She needn't have worried, both boys were asleep. She stood there for a while letting herself cry and sink down into a pit of emotions. A little while later she heard a hammock groan and hurriedly tried to muffle her tears. Footsteps sounded on the floor,
"Annabeth?" Percy asked, "Are you okay?"
"Yeah," she muttered hurriedly whipping away her tears, "just tired" he walked towards her to lean against the wall. He turned away for a moment
"Sure about that," He asked quietly turning himself to look at her. She knew he had heard her cry
"Luke?" he asked as if that was any sort of explanation for the millions of thoughts running through her head.
"Yeah" she muttered, as if it was. He walked back to his hammock turning around to say something but stopped.
"Um, Annabeth?" he said, his voice a pitch higher then it had been a moment ago,
"Yeah" she turned to face him,
"You umm, you got-" he was cut off as they heard alarm bells ringing and the Captain's ghostly face poked in
"Were approaching the sea of monsters, Master Clarise wants you on deck"
Without a word Percy shoved her his coat and started packing the bag. Annabeth was confused until she realised what she had forgotten, in the midst of her crying and small amounts of seasickness she hadn't even paid attention to the cramps. One glance at her rear answered her suspicions and she gratefully tied Percy's jacket around her waist. She ran up to the deck to find Clarisse standing at the helm shouting orders.
"What are you doing?!" Percy shouted at her through the growing wind
"Setting course for Charybdis!" Clarisse shouted back
"That's suicide!" Annabeth ran to the front, "We should go through the clashing rocks instead!"
"My cannons cant blast rocks apart" Clarise replied grimly as they entered the whirlpool. The engines rumbled and and Tyson looked nervously around. Annabeth held onto the railing with white-knuckled fists. below, her abdomen had decided to slowly stab itself to death. she hissed out a breath as a particularly bad one hit. Clarisse gave her a strange look and then snorted. Reaching into her pocket she pulled out two pills and passed them to her
"Me too wise girl, " Annabeth raised her eyebrows but took the pills.
"These Better work" she muttered
"Don't worry they will," Clarisse rolled her eyes. "Lee Fletcher made them for Selena, her cramps are always super bad." Annabeth smiled but her joy was cut off by a mutter from Tyson.
"Not meant for deep water" he muttered to himself.
"Miss!" A sailor shouted running up to them "The engines are going fast!" Clarisse growled at the hitch in her plans but Tyson stepped forward
"I can fix them!" he announced proudly
"No!" Percy cried "Tyson no!"
"It is alright brother," Tyson smiled "I can fix them"
He ran down the ship's deck to the engine hold, for a moment the ship stopped groning and Annabeth almost thought they would make it when all at once everything exploded.
She grabbed on to Percy as she ships deck splintered beneath them. Latching onto a piece of wood she heard a shout and saw that one of the Sailors stuck on the non-exploded sinking back of the ship had tossed them a lifeboat. She hoisted Percy over her shoulder and heaved them into the boat. Panting she dropped to her knees letting Percy Fall to the floor. Her limbs feeling like lead she passed out next to him.
A little while later she felt Percy stir beside her and forced herself into a sitting position
"What, What happened?" he muttered rubbing his face and looking around the boat "Where-TYSON?" he shouted turning around as if he might see the cyclops in the water. He stared at Annabeth "Where is he?" and Annabeth felt her throat close up
She stared at the now calm water and whispered "I don't know, cyclops are immune to fire so maybe he survived but..." she trailed off. Percy nodded blankly and seemed to push away the thoughts
"We still have some stuff" Annabeth pulled halfheartedly at what was left,
"Are you okay?" he asked
"What?"
"On the deck, you were in pain or something" He prompted
"Oh, umm" Think Anabeth! she mentally berateted herself, are you a child of Athen or not? Think!
"Please don't say shoe cleaner again" Percy asked her, dead serious.
"What?" did he hit his head or something she thought.
"Back on the quest last year grover tossed you a bag which you said was full of shoe cleaner," he reminded her. "Well it wasn't, and I knew that so I stole one of the things from the bag and-"
"you stole one of my things" Anabeth wasn't sure wether to be mad, or laugh or die from embaresment."
"Well... Yeah." he went on quickly "Anyways I stole one and then asked my mom what it was when I got home. she told me what it was and what it was used for." he paused for breath his cheeks tinging red beneath his wind tossed black hair. He's cute when he's nervous, she thought.
"So she said that you were on your- You know... and that I should tell you you shouldn't be embarrassed because its normal and-"
"Percy" She interrupted
"Yeah?"
"You asked your mom about pads"
"Well... Yes" he glanced at her nervously. she threw back her head and laughed, not caring that it would get her pants even more stained.
"You, I don't even know what to say" she stared at him in exasperation. "Your supposed to be annoying and stupid but then you go do something like this!?"
he looked relived "So your not mad?" He asked her
"No I'm not mad Seaweed brain!" she rolled her eyes
"Okay," He muttered, a little braver "Then are you on your... period or is their another explanation for why there was blood on your pants?" now it was her turn to go slightly red
"Yeah, umm sorry about that," he looked at her confused
"I mean I know I'm not comfortable with it but you can't really apologise for something you can't control." she gave him an aprasing look, maybe seaweed brain wasn't as bad as she thought.
