James did not oppose when Bucky said he wanted to attend the funeral. He understood that even if he was not a fan of her family. Olivia was someone that meant something to Bucky. As he was standing in the back of the funeral that was outside. A lot of old class mates from St Augustine Prep was in attendance.
He felt someone take his hand he looked down to meet a pair of blue eyes. It was Shelby he swallowed hard as he squeezed her hand. The funeral continued on as they all stood there listening to the minister. After it was over Shelby went to her car Bucky spoke to a few people but seen her.
He walked over to her. "You didn't have to come. Dad told me what her uncle did to your aunt." He said
She bit her lip and looked down. "I came for you. Nobody knows me or knows the ties that she has with my family." She said
"But you are one of the top surgeons in NY." He said
"Doesn't mean people know me. Not every body reads the medical journals." She said
He smirked. "True unless you are one of those weird people that reads magazines while taking a dump. Anyways..Um do you want to grab a coffee with me?" He said
"Sure.." she said
"Do you mind if I ride with you? I had a cab bring me..my Audi was totaled and George is on vacation." He said
"Yeah.." she said
They got into her white BMW and headed out of the cemetery. They parked in front of a coffee shop they ordered two coffees and some soup.
"You look better.." she said
"Thanks.." he said
"Shelby I'm sorry for what I did to you. It was wrong of me to use you to get my job back." He said
She looked down as she played with coffee stir.
"You didn't deserve that. I'm messed up and broken..and I've always just done what I had to do to get what I wanted. I've been more of an afterthought when it comes to my parents..especially my dad. He and I have been in the last week trying to repair the broken relationship." He said
"You know when I chose to go to medical school over law. My dad wasn't happy I'm the only one in my family that didn't choose law or politics. But once he saw that I was serious about it and I showed him that this was something that was important to me. I finished medical school and he was proud of me because he saw that I was happy. And I think instead of trying to get your dad a attention in all the wrong ways you should of been fighting to show him that you are your own person. Nobody can change who you are James..but the bad boy persona should of left a long time ago." She said
Bucky looked down.
"When you got into law school you should of cut your ties with Olivia. I think besides their past history your dad was not taking you seriously cause of how you have been..you weren't acting seriously about it. You were doing all you could to defy him instead of proving to him that you were serious.." she said
"Ok Dr Phil." He said as blinked tears away.
"I'm just saying James. It's time to grow up no more of you trying to get bad attention. I'm sure it was hard to hear for your dad. You are getting a second chance at life don't blow it." She said as she placed her hand over his.
"Thanks Shelby.." he said
A few minutes into them eating her pager went off.
"I've to get back to work." She said
"Thanks for talking to me and having lunch with me." He said
"Do you need me to drop you off?" She said
"Do you have time?" He said
"Yeah it's on my way." She said as they paid their tab and left.
She dropped off Bucky in front of his apartment building.
A week later Bucky closed down his office he passed his clients on to two old buddies that had their own business law office Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson. Bucky rejoined his dad's legal team at Barnes Corp.
But James had a surprise for Bucky.
"Dad the legal department is that way.." Bucky said as they walked down the hall.
"I know where my legal department is. But you are more than just my legal aide. You are also a CEO here so here is your office." James said as they approached a door.
On the front of the door it said "James B. Barnes III. Co-CEO and Legal Head."
"Dad..I. Legal head?" He said
"You deserve it James. You are my son and instead of me putting you downstairs with the other legal aides I should of made the head cause you are family first." He said
Bucky hugged his dad. "Thank you." He said
"Don't let me down or make me regret this okay?" James said
"Yes sir.." he said
Bucky opened the door to his new office where Aiden and Bradley were hiding they gave him a big hug along with his cousins and his uncle Beau.
