A few weeks have passed since the kids had received word of Roman Cain's return.
Thanks to Adam, they managed to enroll at Liberty High handing Principal Ramirez their false papers, report cards, and registration forms.
At first, Principal Ramirez was hesitant to accept these kids in the middle of the school year. But when Johnny told her a tale about their foster parents' tight schedule, she let it slide.
What impressed the school principal is that these slightly attractive kids showed initiative in their old school.
Despite their extra-curricular activities were unusual, they all have transferable credits which allowed them to enroll in Liberty.
They even have decent grades and no priors.
"Thank you so much for applying to our school," she tells the children. "I am excited that you four want to be a part of this wonderful community."
The four kids exchange doubtful looks at one another before smiling awkwardly at the principal.
"Something tells me she wasn't popular in high school," Nessa whispers to Johnny, who pinched her left arm in response.
Meanwhile, Brooke and Caleb put on artificial smiles.
They couldn't care less about the kids, homework, or this overly perky school principal. All they are concerned about is finding out what happened to Enrique.
As Johnny converse with Principal Ramirez, his younger sister observed old newspaper clippings scatter across the light-gray walls.
Old potted plants wither near the radiant glass. Behind the principal were bookshelves full of Romance paperbacks, files, and drawings from her five-year-old daughters.
While her shelves were neat, Principal Ramirez's desk is as chaotic as the kids yelling in the hallway.
Nessa studied the stack of papers, crumpled candy wrappers, pretty pictures of Ramirez's daughter and wife, and the dark bronze nametag presenting her name.
Jesus. she wondered. And to think she has trouble keeping her room clean.
"Why, thank you, Principal Ramirez," said Brooke. "However, we are more interested in our class schedules."
"Oh?" Principal Ramirez breathed. "I didn't give them to you?"
The kids all shook their heads in unison.
Immediately, the principal gets up from her seat. "Oh dear, I'll be right back."
Minutes after she left the office, Nessa let out a sigh of relief.
"Jesus Christ," Nessa grumbled. "I thought she would never shut up."
Johnny glares at her. "Be patient, okay? As soon as we get the information we need, we'll get the hell out of here."
