I scream into my pillow and bang my fist on the mattress of my bed.

Someone is wishing bad karma on me.

I feel Mr. Cat's fur brush against my legs and squirm at the ticklish feeling.

I've had Mr. Cat since I was ten, he's a cocky bastard who doesn't like anybody except me. One time my little brother Lorenzo grabbed him and he had scars from the scratch marks Mr. Cat left him.

Mr. Cat thinks he's a king and that's about it. He was named by me and don't ask why that name specifically. I was ten and had no idea what to name a cat.

"I'm sure it won't be such a bad thing. It's only for a semester and you guys don't have to start the project until two weeks. Besides, this could be a good thing for the both of you." Meliana flops down on the bed next to me and turns to lie on my side so she can see the look on my face.

"How is this a good thing? The guy sent my dad to jail, Mellie."

Meliana is the only person who knows everything that went down. I told her during a sleepover after she realized how uncomfortable I'd be around Mark.

She sighs and points out, "No, Alfredo Thomas sent your dad to jail. I'm not defending him because Mark was a dick for how he treated you, but I will say I don't blame either of you for feeling the way ya'll do."

I sat up and hugged my legs.

"My dad would kill me if he found out I was doing this project with Alfredo's Thomas son. He doesn't even know we're in the same friend group."

Meliana sits up and lays her head on my shoulder.

"Then don't tell him." She shrugs and I lay my head on her, "I'm a horrible liar, you know this."
