Kim Jonghyun, better known mononymously as Jonghyun, was born in Gwangjin District, Seoul, the capital of South Korea on April 8, 1990. He was born in an average Korean family. Jonghyun was raised by his older sister, his mother, and his grandmother.
He wished to follow music ever since he was a kid, and his passion for music made him dropout of high school in 10th grade to pursue a music career. But later he attended Chungwoon University before transferring to Myongji University, where he received a Master's Degree in film and musical studies.

His incessant craving for making music had him starting his own band, named Zion in his early teenage years. His band performed throughout the country and slowly gained national attention. So that one day, when he performed with his band for the school festival. S.M. Entertainment, one of the biggest and most reliable South Korean talent agencies, scouted Jonghyun and offered him a contract. At the age of 15, Jonghyun took his first steps toward making his musical dream a reality.
