Corey and Sam slowed their run down to a walk, having exhausted all their energy escaping the herd at the school. Sam clutched his chest and frantically glanced behind him.
"I'm pretty sure we outran them." Corey panted.
He leaned on a tree to catch his breath, Sam followed suit.
"Jesus Christ, man. That was fucked, how did that all go so wrong?" Sam said.
"Yeah, that was fucked."
"I mean, Zeke's fucking dead. Did you see it?They fucking killed him."
Corey nodded, waiting for the burning sensation in his lungs to subside.
"I saw, but honestly it was bound to happen sooner or later."
Sam gave him a puzzled look.
"What do you mean?"
"Let's be real, Zeke had a complex. The guy went and 'punished' people to teach them a lesson, probably thought he was the fuckin' saviour of mankind. It was only a matter of time before somebody wasn't going to take his shit lying down."
Sam's expression changed as he considered Corey's statement. He thought back to the times Zeke had imposed his 'lessons' on members of other groups, or even members of their own. Zeke was a good leader, he had kept them safe and organised in the worst of times. However Sam had to agree with Corey, Zeke was tempting fate with the amount of enemies he made in the name of 'teaching'.
"I guess so. Shit, Paul's brother is gonna be pissed though." Sam said solemnly.
"Fuck him. He's an asshole and so was Paul. If you ask me, that girl did everyone a favour by icing that idiot."
Sam shrugged. Once again, Corey was right. Paul was definitely an asshole to almost everyone in camp and his brother was worse.
Sam stopped walking and turned to Corey.
"What are we gonna do? Are we going back there to finish the fight?" He asked.
Corey stopped and sighed.
"You know what? Fuck that, that was Zeke's fight. We lost everyone back there because of his fucking ego. I say leave the kids alone, if the Geeks didn't get them that is."
"What do we tell everyone back at camp?"
Corey thought for a moment, piecing together a convincing story in his head.
"We tell 'em Zeke chopped off the girl's finger, we left and got caught in a herd. You and me were the only survivors." He paced back and forth in the snow as he spoke.
"That sounds good to me." Sam agreed.
The two of them continued walking back to their camp, leaving the school behind them.
