After 10 years with me, there's no way he expects me to stay in the car and wait for him to come to my rescue. He couldn't even if he tried. I don't need a superhero, anyway, I need to be left alone. Matt is no longer in the car,, but his presence lingers in the seat next to me. Even when Matt leaves a room, you can still feel him there. His absence is just as loud as his presence. You're never truly alone, the molecules your lover leaves behind will always be in your air, in your lungs, inside of you forever.
I step out of the car and stomp towards the open door, the door to our romantic weekend getaway. I pause for a minute outside of it, thinking back to my daydream of the road to freedom. I turn to look at the car. I could still turn around now, right? It's still not too late. The keys are still in the ignition. If I could just-
"You must be Miss Bethany!," My escape plan is squashed in a matter of seconds by a boisterous voice. "It's so nice to meet you!"
I blink a few tears out of my eyes, bringing my hands up to get rid of them quickly. "Hi, yeah, that's me. I'm so sorry, we weren't expecting anyone. We can just get out of your hair." After I said it, I immediately realized this must be the housekeeper, and she's just doing her job. "Sorry. You must be-""Nonsense, dear. I was just making sure the house was in order for you, Mr.Brown was just mowing the lawn. He'll be delighted to meet you! This house is always so empty you might as well move in!" The awkward silence is filled by her booming laugh. I do not laugh.
"Well, my name is Charlotte Brown. You can just call me Charlotte. Oh, we are so very glad that you are here. Come in, we were just making dinner!" She smiles at me and leads the way into the house.
My head is already spinning from this interaction. I mean, mowing the lawn in the dark? Why are they making dinner in someone else's house? Can they please just leave so that I can be alone?
"It's rather dark to be driving so far, don't you think? Where are you two from?" Mrs.Brown - Charlotte - interrupts the silence, again.
"It was about a 4 hour drive. We hit the sweet spot of traffic, we're just happy to be here now. I've been dying to relax." I tried to sound as polite as possible.
"Oh, I'm sure you are just DYING to relax after such a long trip! You should have left earlier!" She grins at me, and something feels off.
"Yeah... That's what I said."
