Knocking upon the door was what awoke Rei, Natsou, and Fuyumi from their slumber. One of the same doctors that took Shoto to the emergency room walked in. There was a remorseful look on his face, mask covering the bottom of his chin. Almost instantly, the family felt a worried gut sinking feeling occurring inside them. "I..i'm so sorry," Dr. Kanashi spoke, fingers clasping together as he choked on his words, "but your son did not make it through surgery."
"Wh-what?" Fuyumi's words were breathless, her grey colored eyes wide with horror."I don't know what happened!" For a moment, Kanashi's usual professional attitude evaporated into thin air, becoming more like a frantic child, "the heart rate monitor just dropped and all brain activity ended! I don't know what could have happened!" The three Todoroki's burst into tears, the doctor's inconsiderate words hurting more than torture would have.
"How long has he been gone?" Natsou asked.
"It would now be ten minutes." Kanashi checked his watch, reading the time. Then, a nurse walked into the room. Her shadowed deep sea blue eyes gave off an aura of depression and negative feelings. "He's alive." Came her monotone voice.
"WHAT??" Kanashi, Rei, Fuyumi, and Natsou gasped.
"His heart began beating again. He's breathing. I was asked to come get his family."
Kanashi dropped to the floor, rubbing at his forehead. "I need a vacation." He sighed exhaustedly, shaking his head unbelieving the news he was hearing.
Rei, Fuyumi, and Natsou were led to Shoto's room. Secretly, they were all scared. The nurse had not said what all they had done to Shoto. She barely said anything, in fact. Soon, the nurse stopped in front of a door, creaking it open. Around the bed was a thin white curtain, the windows opened just enough to allow a breeze inside the room. Rei quickly rushed over to her youngest son's side, going to open the curtain. But the nurse intervened.
"Please do not touch the curtain until Dr. Nyusu arrives." The nurse said, her voice sorrow filled. Just as she finished talking, everyone turned and saw Dr. Nyusu walk inside.
"Nurse, please go down to the nursery. The babies will need to be fed soon." His deep voice spoke, and it seemed to ease the tension piled away in the room. The nurse bowed, before walking out of the room, dragging her feet some. Dr. Nyusu's deep brown eyes turned to the family, looking sad but he wore a small smile. "Before I explain the damage, I do give you three my deepest apologies. This must be such a hard time for you." Nyusu said, walking and grabbing a remote off the TV stand.
"Just..tell us what happened to him." Natsou said impatiently, a sickening feeling dropping into his stomach. Nyusu nodded, understanding why the young white haired man was getting restless. Tapping a red button on the small remote, the curtain around Shoto's bed pulled away."Oh my god.." Rei covered her mouth, eyes brimming with hot tears.
Shoto's torso, left arm were bandaged. On his face, his left side was bandaged up much like how it was when he was a child. BUt this time, his neck was also covered. His left arm had bandage patches over the spots where Fuyumi had seen large ice shards and crystals. And his left arm was in a cast. An anesthesia mask was over Todoroki's mouth, keeping him asleep.
"His quirk did indeed malfunction," Nyusu diagnosed, "but since malfunctions are so rare, we don't know what could have caused it. But my guess is a serious breakdown. Has he been under any serious stress?""H-he's always stressed." Natsou answered, voice cracking.
"Well, the most serious damage that happened were the burns that formed over this area." Nyusu pointed over Shoto's right arm and right side of his torso. "We had to stitch around them so the skin would part from the rest of his body. On his opposite side, not much damage happened, though underneath those patches were frostbite. But, we were able to fix those.""What about his face? What happened there??" Rei asked quickly.
Nyusu paused for a moment, before he spoke, "It appears that before the malfunction, he burned his left cheek and his neck. That in itself was bad enough, but it looks like he didn't take his hand away when his left side stopped producing fire and became ice. And, you should never put ice over a burn. So, this only made his scar worse."
"Will he be okay?" Fuyumi asked, gently grasping Shoto's left hand.
