Lunch after lunch, month after month, Harry and Louis shared their lunch together and got closer and closer. It was quite obvious to Louis that he was falling hard for the floppy-haired boy. It wasn't that anything extravagant had happened, it was the little things. Like how Harry would always shake his floppy mess of hair viciously before swiftly swooping it to the side. Or how Harry would always tell the worse jokes, he would start with the punch line but it would take him way longer than it should because the boy wouldn't stop giggling. Louis would lightly laugh along with Harry's jokes as he learned Harry takes it very personally if you insult his humour. But most of all, Louis loved Harry's kindness. A couple of months ago, Harry had learned about Louis money issues. Since then, the kind boy packed an extra lunch just for Louis. Gratefully Louis would take the lunch and in return, Harry would receive a kiss on the cheek. Louis loved to watch Harry's dimpled grin be complemented with a rosy blush.
For Harry, it was more complicated. Yes, Harry admitted he did indeed like Louis, a lot. But he couldn't bring himself to say it out loud. It was the reason Harry sat in this closet day after day, he was scared. Terrified. He knew Louis wasn't scared, he would leave this closet right now. Of course, only if Harry would agree to it as well. Much to Harry's dismay, Louis had grown on him. Harry didn't want Louis to leave and take his sunshine smile away with him. Just the little things about Louis was enough to make Harry fall head over heels for him. The gentle touches, the simple but sweet pecks on the cheeks. But what Harry loved and appreciated the most was the support. The conversation had come up once or twice where Harry had opened up about how he was scared to face everyone. Louis not once ever tried to pressure him into leaving or "man up." Louis just held him and whispered things such as "Only when you're ready."
Harry feared he would end up like Mr Smiths. Always coming in and out of this closet, indecisive.
"Lou, do you think I'm loveable?" Harry blurted out. Something Louis has grown quite used to. But Louis was surprised at the question. He knew Harry was having a hard time opening up and loving himself but that question was so obvious to Louis.
"How could you think such things, Hazza?!" Louis jumped up onto his feet pulling Harry up with him. "Haz, of course, you are loveable." After a moment of staring into Harry's soft eyes, Louis knew what he had to do. He took in a deep breath, he was going to finally do it. Life is too damn short to be scared all the time, something his mother regularly told him.
"I love every inch of you." The sentence didn't come out as confident as Louis hoped. It came out just above a whisper and his voice cracked halfway through.
Harry's eyes grew wide in shock and even a little disbelief. How on earth could someone as perfect as Louis love someone as broken as me? Millions of clusters of doubtful thoughts clouded Harry's head. Only to be immediately dusted away when Louis jumped into Harry's arms like a baby koala bear holding on for dear life.
"Please don't be mad, Hazza. Please, I can't lose you!" Sobs flew out of Louis' mouth as he tightened his grip on his embrace. Only adding to Harry's shock, Louis was crying and Harry had never seen Louis cry.
"Lou, it's alright. Please, please don't cry." Harry wiped away Louis tears with his thumbs before pulling him back into another embrace. "I'm just scared, Lou." As soon as those words left Harry's mouth, the older boy tensed in Harry's arms. Stepping out of Harry's arms, hurt.
"What do you mean you're scared?" He felt a stinging sensation in his heart, he had no idea what it was. He knew he hated the feeling though. "You're scared of me?" Louis squeaked out allowing more tears to drop.
Harry violently shook his head placing his hands on Louis petite shoulders. "I'm scared to say it back." After his confession, Louis' eyes softened. Even though it hurt he understood.
"You don't have to say it back, Haz." Sniffling, Louis shifted from one foot to the other. It broke Louis a bit that Harry was too scared to finally admit everything to himself. No matter what the next words that would come out of Harry's mouth, Louis knew he felt the same way. He just knew it.
"But I want to. So badly." He gazed as Harry's eyes filled with sorrow and fear. This was the hardest part, it always was. Finally admitting those words to someone. Louis thought, he completely understood where Harry was coming from. He has been there too.
"Then say it, baby. You can do it." Trying his best to encourage the frightful boy, Louis stepped closer to him making sure their forehead were touching. Just touching each other made their skin burn, was that normal? No. Of course, it wasn't. It was a Harry and Louis thing.
Harry's heart skipped a beat and his breathing got heavier as Louis cupped his wet checks.
"Say it. For me." His whispers sent spirals of shivers down Harry's back. A panic attack was at large but Harry tried his best to shove it away and keep it locked away.
One last breath.
"I love you."
And it all calmed. Harry's breathing matched the boy's in front of him. His smile mirrored Louis beautiful one and his tears came to an end, crossing the finish line with the shining blue orbs opposite him. It wasn't easy. In fact, it was hell. But the aftermath was heavenly.
"I love you, Harry." And just like that, Louis fingers intertwined with Harry's and they made their way to the ominous door.
"You sure?" Their grip on each other's hands grew tighter as Louis held back. Only if Harry is truly ready. Waiting for his reply, Louis gingerly smoothed over Harry's already silky skin with his thumb.
"I've never been more sure." Smiling proudly, Louis opened the closet door letting the breeze of new refreshing air blow through their hair. Guiding Harry with him, laughter erupted from the two happy and relieved boys. Harry closed the heavy door, shutting away all his tears and uncertainty.
"Lou, come here." Louis as requested turned to face Harry, only to find his lips placed against his Harry's. Their lips moved as one, in sync and at peace. It was filled with passion and no tension at all. Kissing the other seemed to clear out any doubts or worries. It felt normal and comfortable. It felt like home.
Pulling back and gasping for air, both boys cheeks were dusted with a bashful pink and they giggled.
"Finally out of the closet, Lou." Harry's eyes danced with excitement and Louis couldn't feel more proud of himself or Harry. Even if they weren't the "acceptable" pair, Louis and Harry couldn't care less. As long as they had each other, they could overcome anything.
After years, months, hours and seconds, they were finally free. Free to share their blooming love to the rest of the world, and free to be themselves.
They wouldn't have it any other way.
