I freeze for a few moments and then leave my room, going to Miles's room again.

I shove the door open.

"Miles, did you hear that??"

He doesn't even turn around, he just shrugs.

"Kate probably just saw a spider."

I walk up to him and stare down at him.

"Miles, I want to go see what happened."

He still doesn't pay attention.

"Go look then."

I sigh, exasperated.

"No, I want you to come with me. I don't remember my way around here that much anymore. I haven't been here in like 5 years, ya know?"

Miles glances at me.

"Yeah, well who's fault is that?"

"Miles, you should know that wasn't my fault!!"

He looks up at me.

"Well then who's fault was it?!!"

"It was Quint's, remember! Quint kept telling us to stay away from each other!"

He rolls his eyes.

"Oh you always blamed everything on Quint!"

I start, tearing up, even though I know I shouldn't be.

"No I didn't! Not always! And it was only because he actually did stuff!! He hurt me, Miles! And you never believed me. No one did."

He looks back at the ground.

"He was a good person, Caroline."

"Then what am I, Miles? If he's a good person what am I?! Cause you seem to hate me now. Before I left, we were really, really close. That's why Quint made me leave. Because he saw us and thought we were too close. We weren't supposed to click, Miles. It was supposed to be Me and Flora and you and Quint. But it never was like that. So he called up this orphanage and said I was an orphan and I needed to be taken right away. They came and stole me away and I didn't even have enough time to say goodbye. And I'm sorry, Miles. I'm terribly sorry."

He glances up at me and then mumbles so quietly I can barely hear him.

"I'm sorry too."

I smile at him.

"So, will you come and check with me?"

He nods.

"Yeah, whatever."

We leave and walk down the long, dark hallway.

Then we hear the scream again, but it sounds like it's behind us.

We turn around to see Kate standing there, with a hand around her mouth.

But what's even worse, is that the hand is familiar.

Miles and I exchange fearful and shocked glances and then look back.

I can't even begin to explain the fear as I realized that the person behind Kate, was Quint.

Suddenly he's throwing Kate against a wall, and reaching for me. All I can register is Miles's yell as I fall into a deep, black abyss.
