"denki!"
a surprised denki turned to face me, huffing from chasing him. unfortunately, he couldn't hear me over bakugo's excessive screaming so i had to run to catch up with them. i put a finger up to try and catch my breath before looking up at him.
he looked confused, i never directly came to denki for anything, it would always be him talking to me.
"what? want some edibles or something? i'm not like todoroki you're not getting them for free..."
"wha-"
i managed to wheeze out before ultimately taking one last heave of a breath and standing straight.
"i said they're not gonna be for fr-"
"no, you little shit, i don't want your drug brownies, tell me where sero went."
he looked quite taken aback. over the one topic we'd discussed together, denki was completely sure i'd ask about wanting things from him.
am i really that much of an open book?
he looked over and whispered to me, wanting to make sure nobody heard where sero was. it was quite a miracle that he trusted me with something like this, maybe because he could expose me about.. various things, so he was quite sure i wouldn't blurt anything out. he looked around, acting very obvious, and whispered into my ear, sending chills through my spine as his hot breath stuck to my neck.
i nodded and turned around, proceeding to walk to the exit door. why would denki be so shush about this? it's not like this place was some forbidden secret hideaway or something. it was only the back of the school.
turning round a few corners i made my way through the winding pipelines to find sero, sitting on his phone with a cigarette in his mouth. so this is why denki was hush. i hated to admit it, but seeing sero hunched over with his legs spread out, looking at his phone made me feel something i really shouldn't.
i slowly walked over and sero quickly dropped and stomped the cigarette in his hand, which was now flat on the floor, terrified that someone of higher authority would find him. or worse, mr aizawa. he looked to me and released a burst of relief.
"oh it's just you ____."
"did i scare you?"
i muttered, walking up to him and looking down as he put his phone in his pocket. the zipper made an unsatisfactory noise and it made me want to open and close it again just so i could do it properly but i had to focus on the situation at large.
"of course you scared me, it isn't everyday that someone creeps up on you doing something illegal whilst also wanting to become a hero."
"damn, did i just get your entire life story?"
sero chuckled for a few seconds and then everything went quiet. the only thing that could be heard was the autumn leaves, rustling along the rusty pipes next to us. the faint noise of his breaths going in and out with an opaque air coming out each time and with it, gradually getting smaller. my breaths trembled in the wind as they released with every blow.
the awkward yet serene silence was ended by sero, who started coughing, i immediately opened my bag and gave him a water bottle, to which he refused twice before actually opening it and drinking some water. taking this as an advantage, i sat next to him, watching his adam's apple bob up and down every time he gulped down the water.
he screwed the cap on and made a sound that sounded like he was satisfied with the was the water refreshed his throat. giving it back to me, our fingers brushed together, i could feel the warmth in his fingertips as they grew pink around the knuckles. he immediately withdrew, placing the bottle in my lap afterwards. the atmosphere between us was very awkward and seemed quite weird.
"so um- what did you wanna talk to me about?"
he uttered under his breath. i almost wouldn't have heard it if this place wasn't as quiet as it was. trying to put my words together and form a proper sentence without looking like a complete fool was tough, i had to say.
"y'now that thing we were talking about in math."
"mhm?"
he muttered, putting his elbows down and leaning back on the bricks.
"i was lying. i wasn't studying. i just didn't wanna look dumb in front of you. i actually had no idea what you were talking about."
sero let out a well-needed laugh. his eyes were shaped like crescents and they held boisterous laughter, the epitome of youth itself.
"why do you think you'd look dumb?"
this isn't something you wanted to talk about often. letting feelings out was a sign of being frail, a hero couldn't be frail. a hero had to be strong. brave in the face of danger.
"a hero must be strong. that's what you were thinking, right ____?"
how did he know?
"yes. i shouldn't mess up, this was a little mistake but-"
"i hate to cut you off there but, you have to realize, hero's are humans too. you can't live life with a stone cold expression just for the sake of others. it'll do you more harm, bottling up those emotions, than letting them out. so it's ok to look weak or dumb sometimes, that's the essence of life, experiences."
"that was a long speech... thank you?"
we both erupted into a laughter. a laughter that broke the sentimental atmosphere around us, an aura that said,
'we really are just a bunch of kids.'
"i'm still mad that you forgot about what you promised though."
he said in a mockingly sad tone, crossing his arms and looking away. it was almost as melodramatic as that one time mineta got a papercut and vowed to make it everyone's last day. i always hated that little bitch.
"well, there's no way to go into the past and re-live what you told me. i forgot, i'm sorry."
"well, you could come to the boba shop with me. it'll compensate for my time you wasted."
i let out a chuckle at how childish he was being, i had a test tomorrow on a very important subject and really should've gone home and reviewed my notes but, maybe this once. what harm could it do?
