Birth control is any act that is used to prevent pregnancy. Some birth control methods are free and can easily be bought over the counter at your local drug store, however, some need a prescription and a visit to the hospital or Planned Parenthood. There are many types of birth control to go over and we are going to split all of the types into four categories- methods that need to be used on a schedule, surgical, life style, and every time use. For every method we go over we will discuss what exactly it is and how it works, effectiveness, benefits, and side effects as well as other topics.
Although most methods are effective, it is advised to not rely on just one method for many reasons. Are you on the pill? Great! You should still use condoms along with the pill. There is not a single method that is 100% effective AND prevents STDs/STIs. As stated, it is also extremely important to note that not all methods prevent STDs/STIs either, which is one of the reasons it is so important to use more than one.
Now that you have a basic idea of what birth control is, proceed to the following chapters to start learning about all of the different methods.
