Our car stopped just before the grooms house, it was covered with beautiful lights and in front of the main gate women from the groom's family where singing the traditional Kashmiri song praising the beauty and character of the bride, blessing the couple with a beautiful marriage ahead. The bride was led in the tent by her mother-in-law and she made her sit on a divan like stage which was beautifully decorated by flowers. We were asked by the other women to follow them inside and were told to sit down beside the stage. The singing women came inside making a circle around the stage; they continued their song while the bride's mother-in-law removed the veil from her face for everyone to see. We were sat there for fifteen minutes and after the ceremony we said our goodbyes to the bride before leaving the place. It was useless to look around to see if the handsome stranger was there because it would only put my hopes up and it was not like I will see him again. My decision turned out to be good since Tara hadn't seen him around too. I guess that ends my meeting if it's even that with the mystery man.
I woke up late the next morning after all we had returned home around 2 AM and since it was a Sunday I didn't have any classes. I could see from my window that the weather had cleared up nice; it was a pretty morning. Going downstairs I realized that I was the only one who was yet to have my breakfast and so I decided to have something light for breakfast, maybe some fruit and tea would do for today. Though it was a holiday I still had to work on an assignment which was due on Tuesday so unfortunately I couldn't rest ugh! I decided to take an apple and my tea to my study where I would have to probably spend the whole day completing my work. Both mum and dad were in the living room doing their own stuff, I said a quick hi to them and went to do my work. Like I said before, the assignment ended up taking my whole day, apart from just lunch and bathroom breaks I didn't take any rest at all and finally was done with it around 7:30 which was dinner time. I was famished and as soon as I left my room I ran to the kitchen to feed my empty stomach.
"What did you cook for dinner mum? It smells divine."
"I cooked aloo matar and some haakh (collard green); don't pick up the lid liza its not ready yet", said mum while hitting my hand with the spatula.
"Ouch! Mum it hurts. When will it be ready I am starving?"
"In about 10 minutes, go and set the table for dinner and call your father too."
"ok." I went to set the dinner table, after placing the plates and filling glasses with water I called my father who was in the living room watching Television to come and have dinner.
Mum brought the food and served it to us, it was super good and I couldn't help myself in taking a second serving. After dinner we watched movie till 10:30 and then I decide to retire to my room.
It had been a few busy days and I couldn't help but feel drained due to the extra work I had to do. While brushing my teeth I went through my mental list of things that I had to do next week:-
· Submit my assignment
· Read the assigned book – Heart Of Darkness
· Prepare for the quiz on Saturday
· Go trekking with zara and manpreet
I also have to call Parveen khala to ask her whether she needed help with cleaning and sorting stuff at the house after all marriage is tedious affair. My mind couldn't help but remember the hazel eyed stranger that I saw yesterday, I avoided thinking about him the whole day I mean what's there to even think about its not as if something happened right. Just because a handsome guy was looking in my direction doesn't mean he was checking me out he was probably interested in Tara.
Washing my mouth I switched off the tap and the lights, closed the door and went to my bed. Laying down I picked up the book City of the Dijnns and began reading ---
"The house was like a memory of childhood, or a dream. There were long dimly lit passages ending in locked doors. On the walls hung dark family portraits and old early nineteenth-century prints of Himalayas. Outside the long, formal, Georgian façade was framed by----"
Ugh! I slammed the book shut I just couldn't focus and kept re-reading the same lines again and again. I can't believe myself I can't focus just because of a guy this has never happened before. Come on don't go around having a crush now you know how that ends with you and plus it's not like you're ever going to meet the person again and you don't know who he is. Be a smart girl and forget about the incident. I think I will just call it a night it's late and since I can't focus on anything else it's better to sleep now.
Closing the light, I snuggled in my bed and gazed outside the window, though the sky was only half visible but I could see the moon peeking out from behind our neighbor's house. It was a half moon, pale yellow in color and was just shinning so calmly. Autumn nights really are beautiful here in Kashmir. I guess the coming week will have a clear sky I still need to check the weather forecast for the week otherwise the trekking plan for Wednesday would have to be cancelled. With that last thought I fell asleep.
