Should've Listened to Mama

When I scraped my knee,
You were always there to kiss it.
Oh, mama, please help me.
Just shine down to pull me from this pit.
To help guide me to be free.

After he was done robbing me of my money,
He robbed me of the feeling to love.
Oh how I wish I could've been there with you,
So I could be a beautiful dove,
And walk by your side, too.

You taught me better,
Then what I have been allowing.
It's all right here in this heart-aching letter.
Oh mama, I don't ever remember cowering.
You filled a position while trying to fill your own.
Kept a roof over my head,
And raised my spirits to be home-grown.

Oh, mama, please come back to me.
Even for a minute,
To help set me free.
