Mihael was walking down the hallway when he got the overwhelming urge to pick up his brother from school, most of the time his brother rode the bus that came within a couple of blocks from their apartment. He shrugged and walked out of the building into the parking lot. Starting the car he turned on the radio. “Thank God it’s Friday and it’s 3 pm, I’m steady glancing at the clock, it’s almost for the weekend. I grab my iPhone, post a status for my friends, send a text before the day’s end, cuz I ain’t tryin to stay in.”

The song was catchy and he smiled. When the song ended the radio announcer came on. He was talking about a music festival that was coming to a town near his in a few weeks.  His curiosity got the best of his and he mentally noted the website they mentioned.

When he got to the school there was still some time before classes ended. He parked the car and walked into the school. He walked around the near silent halls, remembering what it was like being a high school student. He walked over to his old locker and touched the number. He looked over at the one next to it. He smiled faintly. Here is where he had met his ex-girlfriend. It had been the third week of school and he had first noticed her when he was getting something out of his locker and she had come up next to him and unlocked the locker next to his. Something had dropped out of her locker and he had picked it up for her. From there their friendship grew into something more than just friends. His heart wrenched painfully. Not for the first time he wished that it had not been so. After two years of dating she had broken up with him and went out with his best friend. They were now engaged and had a son together.

He sighed and put his head against the cold surface of the locker door. A lone tear escaped. Just then the bell rang. He straightened quickly and wiped the tear away. He went toward the class his brother had just gotten out of. He was pushed by a tall blonde hair guy into a tall light brown haired girl. He stepped away from her and mumbled sorry. She smiled and said that it was no problem. He glanced into her eyes for a moment. They were the color of hot chocolate and were kind and gentle. He smiled just slightly without thinking. She ducked her head and kept walking. He watched her walk away. A ghost of a smile played on his lips. He continued down the hallway and poked his head in the class that his brother was just in. To his surprise he saw his brother sitting in his deck with his head down.  Mihael walked in and touched his brother on the shoulder. “Adrian, what are you doing here?”

Adrian’s head snapped up and focused on his brother. Mihael saw that his brother had been crying and his heart hurt for him. “Come on little bro, let’s get out of here.”

Adrian stood up slowly and walked behind his brother out of the class room. They had gotten out of the school and almost to Mihael’s car when a pack of big guys stepped in front of Mihael. They looked past him and focused their attention on Adrian. The leader looked threateningly at him. “I thought I told you to stay in that classroom until we told you to come out.”

Adrian shrank behind his older brother and whimpered. The other boys laughed and pointed and said sarcastically, “Look! He’s a crybaby and he hides behind his big scary brother.”

They turned their attention to Mihael. His anger was boiling just below the surface and he wasn’t sure how much longer he would be able to keep it in check. He balled his fists and took a deep breath. His blue-green eyes flashed as he said through clenched teeth, “I would appreciate it if you left my brother alone.”

The big guys laughed and the leader said, “Oh I’m so scared. I can take you any day.”

Mihael smiled. “Can you now?”

“Yes I can.” The leader replied. “In fact I think I’ll just take you right now.”

Mihael pushed his brother away from him and settled into a fighting stance. The leader took a wild swing. Mihael stepped away and the leader fell on his face. In a flash Mihael jumped on top of him and pulled his right arm behind his back pinning him down with his knee. When the leader tried to get up, Mihael pulled the arm a little tighter. The boy whimpered and lay still. “Now, are you going to bother my brother or any other unfortunate soul in this school?”

The boy shook his hand, still whimpering. “Ok, good. Now leave before I tell anyone about this.”

Mihael released the boy and they ran away with their tails between their legs. He looked over at his brother and saw a smile on his face. He winked and ruffled Adrian’s hair. “Come on kid let’s go get something to eat.”
