one | the past still haunts me

Dream awoke from his midday nap to the familiar ringing of a discord call in the distance of the room from the speakers on his desk. He turns and groans as he attempts to push himself out of the comfort of the warm covers. With his body up and out of bed, he shivers as he's met with the cool air from the AC. The glowing light of the screen meets his tired green eyes and he squints to read the names "George" and "Sapnap" displayed across the screen.

As Dream places his headset over his messy blonde hair and rests himself into the familiar feeling of his chair, he clicks the green button to join his friends. He is met with George's whines,

"Dreeeaaammm, you're late!"

"Uhh, I'm sorry?" Dream responds in a sleepy, confused manner.

That's when it hits him, George had a stream planned today. He's struck with an instant feeling of guilt.

"Why do you sound so confused Dream? Did you just wake up sleepy head? Me and Sapnap have been waiting for you for ages."

Dream's guilt deepens especially when he opens George's stream and realizes he had already been live for some time. Some relief is lifted off his shoulders when looking to chat to see George and Sapnap's banter and acts of killing each other entertained the thousands of people watching.

"Aww George, missed me that much huh? You didn't have to wait for me."

Dream could see the flustered look on George's face, the typical reaction between him and George's joking flirtation. Dream never understood why he loves teasing George in this way. Without failure, it results in a smile creeping across his face. He's always been under the assumption that it's just the way their friendship is, it's never been any different.

"Shut up, Dream. If anything you're the one who's been missing me."

"Oh come on now," Dream states in a low gruff before jumping into the Minecraft server with George and Sapnap to continue the stream.

"Bye chat!" George announces.

"Bye, everyone!" Sapnap and Dream say in response to George ending stream.

Dream watches George through the pixels of his second monitor before it goes dark. A sick feeling arises from Dream's stomach as this occurs, almost as if it's disappointing that George's face no longer lighting up his monitor. He almost instantly dismisses this as his body needing a break after a long stream.

Sapnap is the first to speak after the conclusion of George's stream,

"Hey, guys I think I'm gonna hop off. I didn't sleep much, unlike someone else in here."

Before Dream gets the chance to defend himself, Sapnap disconnects from the voice channel leaving him and George alone. Dream notices the same sick feeling returning in his stomach, dismissing it as the same reason as before. But as he and George continue to sit there in silence the pit in his stomach doesn't fade.

"Hey George, I wanna apologize sincerely this time for being late to the stream. I've just had a lot going on the past couple of weeks," Dream pipes up first breaking the still air.

"No worries Dream," George pauses before continuing, "You know you can talk to me right?"

"I know, I know. I just don't see the point in talking about it, ya know? I mean what's done is done. It's nothing new to me at this point anyway."

"Dream, I worry about you. I think it really could help if you would ju-"

Dream doesn't give him the chance to finish, "Just lay off George. I already said I don't want to talk about it."

This comes off harsher than Dream expected due to the return of the static silence in the discord call. But what else could George think would happen? Dream's never been one to be open about his emotions, especially those of his past breakups. Yet he can't ignore the guilt rising up from within him for the second time today. The feeling of guilt is combined with warmth and confusion, George cares...

His thoughts are interrupted by George's voice, "I think I'm just going to go, I'll catch you later."

Once again before Dream gets the chance to speak, his best friend disconnects and immediately goes offline leaving Dream with his thoughts. Frustration rushes over him; Not only did he upset his best friend, but emotions from his most recent breakup consume his mind.

Allowing the hum of his PC to subside, Dream pulls himself away from his desk. Letting out a sigh, he plops himself onto his unkempt bed drowning himself in the blankets. Choosing to let himself go, the tears begin flowing down his face. The combination of confusion, hurt, and guilt has officially overcome him, slipping into a slumber to escape even though he just slept hours prior.

Relationships have never been successful for Dream in the past; always the heartbroken and never the heartbreaker, but nothing could compare to the hurt of his last. Being cheated on is something no one should ever have to experience, yet Dream has and is left with the fear of loving again.
