Chapter 1!! Let's get to meet one of the main characters. Yes, I used Sean O' Pry as the "cast" but I really want you guys to imagine Jack as your own character in your minds.
I only put Sean O' Pry in the cast so you can get a reference of how I imagine Jack, but don't let the real person define the fictional character.
This chapter is dedicated to @Naina_21 Hope you enjoy my second novel :)
Jack M. Cooper
September
“Can you put that box of bricks in the truck for me?” Stan motioned to the box lying near my foot.
“Sure,” I effortlessly lifted the crate and heaved it up onto the waiting truck. I hit the side of the trunk to let the driver know that everything was loaded.
“Jack, you gotta find yourself a better job,” Stan took off his work gloves and his helmet to wipe the sweat from his brow, “You’re still young. I’m sure as hell somebody will be happy to take you in.”
“I’m fine where I am Stan,” I patted his shoulder firmly, “I like being here with the fam. I worked here for four years!”
Four LONG years.
“Here,” Stan slapped a newspaper on my chest that was filled with articles about new jobs, “Just look through it and see what you like. You can stay here too, but you gotta find a better job to help you enjoy life.”
“Alright,” I took the newspaper and tucked it under my arm. Walking back to the shed, Stan and I talked about what we had planned for our vacations on September 9th to the 16th.
“I’m gonna go see some fireworks with the lady and kids,” He chuckled, “They’ve been dying to do that.”
“Sounds like a plan,” I smiled and picked up my bag.
“What about you Jack?”
“Nothing really,” I shrugged, “I don’t have any plans so far. Visit the old house, and maybe just relax at home since we have the week off.”
“You want to go see the fireworks with us?”
“Nah, I’ll be fine,” I gave Stan a big hug, “You go and enjoy your time with your family.”
We nodded our farewell and I got in my sky-blue Ford F-100 pick up truck. Even though she was old, she was still a beauty and a running machine. I swiftly drove home and got into the shower right away.
I let the icy cold water loosen the muscles in my back as I watched the water run down the walls.
I thought about how the past several years had gone by in a flash. After becoming an orphan thirteen years ago, I had always felt lonely. Growing up in an orphanage wasn't that most wonderful thing since nobody adopted me... But I still had some friends.
The thought of becoming an orphan enraged me.
How could anybody be so cruel to burn a family’s house down?
The anger boiled inside of me, but the cool water toned it down a notch. The shower was so crappy that the hot water never came out. Especially during the winter.
