Hello Bastards new and old, welcome to this week's re-upload! Hi, yes Rylie wrote this ages ago and wattbitch deleted it, fun. So here you go, you can have it back now. Yee
A Dybbuk is a Jewish myth and is a possessing spirit that is known to be mischievous and haunts objects or sometimes even people.
In 2003, Kevin Mannis, a young man who owned an antique shop in Downtown Portland, went to a garage sale like he always did at weekends to get new stick for his shop. This particular sale had items that were sold in lots. The old owner of the items had passed away, she was around 103 and was a Holocaust survivor. The one lot he was interested in was lot 29. There was a small box sitting on the table that looked like a wine case with a sign on it saying "mystery box". It looked really old but was still in good condition, like no one had touched it in years. He put a bet on the lot and won it.
As Kevin was packing up his new items into his truck the owner of the garage sale came up to him and started talking to him.
"Oh so you went with the Dybbuk box?" She asked him. Now this peaked Kevin's interest as he was Jewish and since a Dybbuk is a Jewish demon he went back to his childhood where his parents would scare him with it. Telling him he better not do anything bad or the Dybbuks would get him.
After inquiring about the name "Dybbuk Box" the woman told him that, "when I was younger my grandma was terrified of it and she couldn't let anyone open it."
The Dybbuk Box had two doors going around 3/4 of the way down and a little drawer at the bottom with a big lock going over the two doors.
"Why couldn't anyone open it?"
"Well we don't know but when ever we said the word Dybbuk she would go like this." The woman lifted two finger up to her mouth and blew out three times quickly onto them, "so we just left her box alone as that was pretty weird."
Kevin was extremely confused as to why the woman would do that and agreed it was pretty weird but ignored it. The woman walked away and Kevin kept packing his stuff into his truck before driving away.
He got to his shop and took the stuff he bought down into the basement. She upper-shop was pretty small and had a huge locked door into the basement. Down there was where he kept all of the stuff he wanted to sell, would put prices on them and then prepare them to be sold. The shop only had one other employee who was called Jane and she was and incredible sales woman. He took the Dybbuk box downstairs and put it on a desk before putting a few other things from lot 29 away and walking back upstairs.
As Kevin was upstairs he felt this urge to go back downstairs. He doesn't know why but he goes down anyway and spots the Dybbuk box. His curiosity peaked and he really wanted to open the box. He yanked on the lock and it didn't open. Since he didn't have a key he grabbed a screwdriver and picked the lock. As soon as the doors opened the drawer did too. There was a big mechanical device that made them both open at the same time. When the box opened he was really disappointed with what he found.
Inside was a few coins from the 1920s, there was a used candle, a few locks of hair, a small wine goblet and a small stone that said "shalom" on it, which means peace.
Kevin assumed it was some old woman's keepsake and held a special purpose to her but it didn't mean anything to him so he closed the doors and went back upstairs.
The next day Kevin was away to get more things for the shop when Jane was in on her own. She was bringing stock upstairs to the main shop. Now the lights in the basement were terrible. Because of all of the antiques they hated going up ladders to fix the lights because of the amount of valuables that could break, normally Kevin would wait until there was one or two working bulbs left before changing them. This was one of those days.
