Mission: AXIS failed. The world knew it. The school knew it. Ms. Frenzy, our new science teacher, she knew it. But that didn't stop her from trying to do another one.
"I have been trying for months," she said. She had short (but big), red hair and large clear-rimmed classes that were for fashion, not for her eye sight.
"My mom will not let me on this," Michael says from the back of the room. "Mrs. Nosbury's last mission nearly got me, Rose, Noah, and Allison killed." Us 4 were still in the class together this year with a but load of new incoming students. "And everyone else was killed so I'm not sure I even want to go myself."
"I can promise you with all of me that it will be much safer this year. We are trying to make history just like last year, but this time there will be professionals on board the entire time. Nothing will go wrong. The principal has agreed and so many boards of space and NASA and shit," she said. "Mind my language. They want to prove they can do something right. And they know their mistake last time. Not having professionals. Everything will be under control."
Within the upcoming weeks, everything seemed to actually be under control. Astronauts have come into our classroom everyday since the announcement of the trip, and have gone into incredible detail on every intricate thing we needed to know, including the science of the gravity-defying color suits.
"We also will not be doing tasks this trip," Mr. Mourney told us. He was the tall, muscular astronaut that seems as though he could beat you up but he's incredibly funny.
"Tasks?" Bennett asks. He was one of the kids that was here last year but his (rich ass) parents didn't allow him on the trip. He's going this year though. "You made them do tasks last year?"
Due to the attitude, Mr. Mourney answered the question towards everybody but Bennett himself. "Yes. Last year, to make sure we knew they were safe, we had the crewmates in board do tasks to ensure earth they were safe."
"But they weren't safe," snapped Sophia from the front of the room. She's a new kid. "If they didn't do the tasks why didn't you guys go over to help them until a Crisis was called?"
"We did our tasks," I respond, overpowering what Mr. Mourney was about to say. "We thought they would've self destructed the ship from Earth if we didn't."
"Why would they have done that?" Bennett asks.
"Because!" I yell. "I don't know! Maybe they could've we were all dead and there were aliens on board so they just destroyed it to kill the aliens that killed us!"
Sophia cackled. "That's the dumbes-"
"YOU WEREN'T THERE!" Michael yelled. "You don't know how stressful it was! Shut your mouths at let Mr. Mourney teach us how to not die this time."
"Thank you, Michael," Mr. Mourney continued.
Three days later was our final lesson before boarding, but Mr. Mourney wasn't here. It was only Ms. Frenzy.
"Where's Mr. Mourney?" Rose asks.
"Mr. Mourney is now prepping the ship as we depart this evening," Ms. Frenzy said. "Our final lesson is to be taught by myself: trust and togetherness."
"R-really?" It was Bennett again. I can't begin to describe what things he's gotten away with the past few weeks. "We don't need a lesso-"
"I'm quite aware that you very well do, Mr. Cohen," Ms. Frenzy snapped. "Because if you talk the way you do in my classroom on the ship, you will be thrown off." The class stared dead silent. "I'm only kidding. Too soon?"
FLASH!
Down the same street, into the same design of a ship; the same groups of people watching us on our sides, cameras blinding us with flashes.
We were headed onto the ship. Me and Michael stood by each others side and Rose nearby. Allison was with her friend Ava and Sophia and Bennett were hooked onto each other's arms with Oliver and Liam together behind them. Olivia stood by herself, but it's not that she needed anyone. Her eyes gleamed in the dawning sunlight. Let's hope I don't fall for her and she kills all of my close friends.
Mr. Mourney was leading the group with the other astronaut Mr. Smith and Ms. Frenzy shortly behind them. The astronauts and teacher got on board first, and the rest of us behind them.
Mr. Smith, Mr. Mourneys assistance, was taking our attendance. Something about this felt safe.
Felt good.
Oliver and Liam were already running around the ship and halls I've been through before. But last time I saw them they had been burned, blown up. Something about seeing them on this new ship perfectly fine put me at peace. And theses kids who had no idea what it was like on the other trip were running around as if it was going to be a blast.
"It's weird, I know," Allison says stepping on, Ava right behind her, gasping at the technological look and important feel of the place. "Here, Ava, I'll show you around."
Sophia and Bennett walked on without a word to anyone and went straight into the cafeteria for food like a group of pigs.
Rose and Michael, who were with me in Storage watching people climb in and on board, hugged.
"Time for the field trip we deserved the first time," Rose said. I felt like I was third wheeling, but then Olivia stepped foot inside as the last person to board so I stood up and walked straight to her. Please don't fall for her.
"Hey, Liv! I could show you around?" I ask.
"Huh?" she says. I've fallen for her.
The ship doors close and Ms. Frenzy announced everyone into Storage. Everyone from around comes back in.
"The room right over there," she points, "has a map to the ship." She stops and smiles around. "Have fun!"
