Percy's POV:

It was supposed to be like any other day at camp. I was supposed to wake up, get breakfast, and have an amazing with my beautiful girlfriend Annabeth by my side, and my best friends. That's what camp is supposed to be like, my day was the complete opposite.

I woke up to the sound of water trickling from the fountain in my cabin, and decided to wake up. I figured I would be late to breakfast anyway, then I got dressed and walked out the door. It was a beautiful morning. By the time I got to breakfast, everyone was already seated and I did too, delighted to stuff my face with some food. I looked over to see Annabeth talking to the other campers in the Athena cabin. She noticed me looking and came over. "Hey, seaweed brain." Said Annabeth as she ruffled my hair. "Love you too, wise girl," I retorted. "So, what's going on today?" I questioned, eager to know what activities and training awaited. "Well actually, Chiron wanted us all to be here. He told me there is a new camper, he arrived during the middle of the night. I think he's around our age, that's pretty late for him to finally figure out that he's a half blood."

Just fantastic, every time a new camper arrives around our age, especially guys, like to think they are so much better than everyone here. They don't think that for long though, after I kick their butt in training classes and capture the flag.

Annabeth and I talked for the next few minutes, in walked Chiron, the centaur leader we all know and love. He cleared his throat, about to announce something important "As most of you know we had a new camper arrive last night. I've told him practically all he needs to know about our world, but I will be asking some of you to give him a tour." The Aphrodite girls' hands shot up in the air, as if to kindly volunteer to tour the new camper, only because he's a guy.

" Everyone meet, Reed Mackenzie, he was claimed by his father last night, Apollo."

Reed stepped out from behind Chiron, and everyone's eyes lit up, I think I saw a couple of girls swoon. This guy looked like a god. The chiseled features, dirty blonde hair, and charming smile. This was very, very bad. In his presence alone I felt as ugly as a gorgon, as I compared myself to him. Not that it matters, but recently I had been the one that the girls would swoon over, well not anymore.

"So," Chiron continued speaking " who would like to take him on a tour of the camp?" Every girl in the room without a boyfriend stood up immediately, but Drew from the Aphrodite cabin and Kayla from the Athena cabin beat all of the other girls to it. They both grabbed him by an arm and walked him out of the room, both girls grinning ear to ear. Before making it out of the room completely, he turned around and glanced at Annabeth, giving her a smile with his perfect set of teeth.

I wanted to grab his perfect face and introduce it to the floor and my fist. He could have any other girl he wanted, but he smiled at my girlfriend. Game on, I decided as I clenched my fist, desperately wishing I could punch him.

My day carried on as it normally would, I went to training and classes with my friends, and Annabeth which I was always keeping close to me. I chose not to take any chances, after all Mr. I'm so hot Mackenzie could jump out at any moment and make me feel as valued as a piece of dirt. Annabeth's sweet voice brought me back to reality " Percy are you okay, all of today you've been rather jumpy, ever since that Reed dude showed up." I looked around as I was walking with my friends and they all nodded their heads, agreeing with Annabeth's statement.

"Dude you don't have to be that way, sure all of us guys feel worthless when he's around, but just wait, we're having a battle tonight at the arena. You can embarrass him there, he isn't a two time hero of Olympus like you are." Said Grover, while patting me on the back in support. " Fine, I'll just show him up there, good idea man."

Night came. Finally, I could show this guy up and gain back my self esteem. All of the campers were gathered at the arena, waiting for the battle to take place. Leo came running up to me and said " Percy, I signed you up for the first battle, and right after I did Reed walked up and signed his name to fight against you. Man o man does he have a death wish." He certainly does, I thought while strapping on my armor, as a dark smile spread across my face.

Minutes later, it was time to begin. I was covered in standard armor with a helmet, and my prized sword, Riptide. The doors to the arena opened up, and I walked out surrounded by my fellow campers  and friends. Then, I was facing Reed. he was in the same armor I was, but his weapon of choice was a curved golden sword, a gift from his dad I expected. I had never seen anything  like it in the armory before.

Chiron's loud voice boomed across the arena " For the first  battle we have the legendary Percy  Jackson." I  grinned in delight as I heard my name echo off the walls while being chanted by my friends.  " And the newcomer Reed Mackenzie." Chiron finished. He counted to three and just like that the fight began.

Reed lunged at me with his sword in confidence, thinking he could have the upper hand. I blocked his attempt to hit me with Riptide and we carried on. It was back and forth, and back forth. Both of us trying to gain ground on the other. There was no way he had never fought before, he moved with great speed and agility. Reed reminded me of my used to be friend and mentor, Luke Castellan. Reed was carrying out moves I had never seen before. Reed's blade grazed my chin, but I had nothing to worry about, no blade could pierce my skin.

(In this fan fiction story Percy still has the Curse of Achilles.)

I sliced Reed's arm with Riptide and he began to bleed, cursing silently under his breath. I had never met this guy before ever in my life, until today, and yet he fought like he was going to kill. You could see the visible fury in his eyes, determined to strike me down where I stood. Knowing I couldn't let the fight go on, I kicked him in the gut and he tumbled backward, losing his balance. The crowd gasped around me. I was tired of this guy already, it had been hours since he arrived, but my hate for him was real. I looked over to see Reed boiling with anger, he wasn't going to give up until he either embarrassed me or killed me, whichever came first was fine with him.

He sprinted towards me, with his sword up, ready to strike. I was ready, or at least I thought I was. His sword was inches away from cutting my head clean off, but suddenly he flipped it around and struck my head with the hilt of his sword. Immediately my world became fuzzy, as if I was dreaming. I was down, and I wasn't getting up to finish the fight. My vision returned, and my eyes searched for Annabeth in the audience. I found her with her mouth wide open, not believing that Reed had won. The crowd was silent, and then thunderous roars of shouting and yelling erupted from the audience of campers. "Reed! Reed! Reed!" They said in a steady rhythm, while some were pouring onto the field, eager to see the victor. Even my friends stood up and clapped. I looked over at Reed who was beaming with joy. He looked me straight in the eye and motioned with his head over to Annabeth, who he gave a smirk.

That was what this was all for. The rookie Reed had won, and with his victory he had taken my pride I had found in being a hero, the respect of my fellow campers, and I had been completely destroyed in front of the love of my life.
