When people met Castiel for the first time, they had a hard time believing he was royalty. He had an easy-going, laid-back personality that was borderline careless. He was often compared to his brother, Merric, who had a stern, authoritative personality. Castiel and his brother were complete opposites that never agreed on anything. Merric enjoyed when people referred to him with royal titles whereas Castiel would never introduce himself as a prince or even allow others to call him a prince.
Castiel hadn't always been this way. When he was younger, Castiel loved rules, guidelines, and organisation in general. He preferred when things were planned and expected rather than random and surprising. He felt happiest when he knew that his entire life was planned ahead of him.
The cause of his sudden persona change was the devastating tragedy of his parents death. No one knew what caused it. Too many sorrows were attached to the misfortune of the King and Queen's death, therefore it was left open and was never investigated. Of course, most people assumed it was murder, including Castiel.
However, his brother Merric was part of the population that thought it was best to forget the mystery cause of his parents death. This would often upset Castiel. He thought that if anything Merric should be most concerned about the cause as his parents death gave him everything he could have ever wanted in an instant. A few days after the royals' deaths, the kingdom needed a new king. Merric, who was next in line for the throne, was immediately crowned.
The change in leadership was one of the many things that would be strongly affected by the death of the former king and queen. But perhaps the thing that had changed the most was Castiel.
After the deaths, he was never the same again. He learned that everything in the world was completely unpredictable. You could have everything one moment and then nothing the next and vice versa. He became careless in everything he did, he barely followed routine. He lived everyday like it might be his last as it was a fact that this was still a possibility.
Castiel stood facing his brother, a dull expression across his face. His eyes shifted across the room, randomly selecting things to focus on.
His brother's voice echoed throughout the throne room, his dull words just sounding like white noise. At this point, Castiel didn't even know what he was talking about. He had gotten used to his lectures from his elder brother and just learned to tune them out. Ever since Merric was crowned, he believed that Castiel's careless attitude and reckless behaviour was his responsibility and therefore felt that it was his job to correct.
"Castiel." His brother's voice pierced through the quiet room. Hearing his name was like a siren through the sea of dull sound. Castiel immediately lifted his head and was faced with narrowed eyes and a frown. "Have you been listening to a single word I've been saying?"
Castiel opened his mouth to speak but quickly closed it not knowing what to say. The truth was that he had not been listening but he figured that his brother already knew that. Merric shook his head at this, making the decision to quickly summarise what he had just said.
"Castiel, you need to start being more mature. This kingdom has a reputation that Mom and Dad tried so hard to build and you just throw away all responsibilities like it's nothing. We both know that they had high expectations for you. And I know that they are not here today but you could at least try to become what they wanted you to be-"
"Stop that." Castiel spat out, interrupting.
"Stop what?" Merric asked, thinking that he hadn't done anything wrong.
