A few days time skip, team ten has already left

Third POV

Once team 10 left Tsunade called team seven to be their backup if needed. Once they all arrived she explained the mission details and that they were only to go if team 10 didn't return after 4 days. Sasuke was annoyed because he didn't think it was that big a deal, Sakura was mad because sasuke was mad, and Kakashi was being Kakashi. They left the office and went home.

Sasuke POV

This is all so annoying, I mean why does my team have to be stupid backup for a mission like this. The travelers weren't scared of whatever it was at all, they in fact seemed to wish they never had to leave. It's the villagers that are creating the problem, they say it's a demon that they disposed of there 9 years ago. I don't believe that because 9 years ago I was 8 so there's no way I wouldn't remember a demon terrorizing the town. 'This is all so stupid, I'm just gonna go to bed' I thought as I walk to bed.

Third POV - with team 10

As they were bounding through the dark scary woods in the forest of death shikamaru couldn't help but fell a bit of unease course through him. He knew that everyone else likely felt the same way, but for some reason he thought it was different. It's not like he had a reason - which bugged him more than he'd like to admit - he just thought it was nerves and decided to ignore it to the best of his ability.

While Shikamaru was deep in thought, Asuma had been observing him in quiet concern. He knew that the boys best friend had gone "missing" in this forest - he says "missing" because he was half dead when the villagers threw him in here, but when the shinobi came to retrieve his body it was gone - it was pretty easy to assume that an animal had come and taken him but Shikamaru had refused to believe that. Asuma sighed as he watched his student for a bit more and let his mind wander.

About 5 minutes later both Shikamaru and Asuma were thrown out of their thoughts by an ear piercing scream. When they came out of their thoughts they saw a line of huge animals, they seemed to be protecting something, and Ino a few feet away cradling a broken arm.

Shikamaru POV

'This is bad, how could I let myself zone out like that on a dangerous mission like this' I thought as I desperately tried to think of a plan that could get us all out of here alive. "Asuma" I said "is it just me or are they protecting something?" He glanced at me before trying to get a look at the thing behind the animals. Bad move. In a second he was flying through the air and crashed into a tree. "Asuma-sensei!" I heard Choji yell before he looked up at the animals and shrunk back in fear. My mind is working a mile a minute and the only thing I can think of that might work is to just back away from whatever they are protecting slowly, yea that seems like a good enough plan. As I was about to explain my plan Ino decided to stand up and start yelling at the animals! 'She's going to get us all killed' I thought worried for all of our lives, one glance at Asuma and I could tell he was thinking the same thing. I briefly wondered why he wasn't talking before I remembered that blunt force trauma to the head can cause you to lose your voice temporarily (please don't fact check me on that I'm not sure it's true, but it sounds like it could be so I guess that's good enough right?)

Third POV

Asuma watched as Ino yelled at a bear and all he could think was that they were all going to die. He couldn't speak let alone try to fight to stop the animals. All He could do is sit there hopelessly and watch in slow motion as his students were getting mauled by huge animals. Then They all heard Ino prepare to yell out again, They were sure she was going to die until Shikamaru yelled out to her to stop. The rest of the team stared in horror as a bear snapped its attention to him and charged right at him. That was until another bear roared and the one charging Shikamaru stopped dead in its tracks. They all watched as it looked at him in interest and walked up to him slowly.

Shikamaru POV

The bear was charging me and I was preparing to die until another bear roared and it stopped the other in its tracks. I watched somewhere between terrified and awed as the animal came up to me slowly and sniffed me. The bears eyes seemed to widen before he stood on his hind legs and tilted his head, 'it's almost like he's bowing' I thought in awe. Then the bear seemed to tilt its head as if to say 'follow me' so I did. As I followed him my eyes wandered and I saw that all the other animals were looking at me with what seemed to be respect in their eyes. I also noticed that all the fighting had stopped and my teammates were looking at me like I had grown another head.

When we got up to the other animals they parted for me, but I still couldn't quite see what was in front of the bear that was still walking ahead. As we neared what they were protecting I saw human legs and a white dress before the bear bent down and picked up the - what I guess is - human and looked over his shoulder at the other animals who seemed to nod and close the circle round us. Once he seemed to be sure my teammates couldn't see he turned around. My blood froze and my mind went blank as I saw Naruto laying in the arms of the bear. As I took a closer look at him he seemed a little beaten up. I looked up at the bear and he seemed to trust me so I took a tentative step forward to gauge his reaction, when he didn't growl or move away I ran up to Naruto and took him in my arms letting out a soft sob through my lips. I never thought I would see him again. I thought I had lost him forever. As I was lost in my thoughts I hardly registered the bear getting up to stand in the circle protecting us from my team. That was when I realized that the animals were trying to protect Naruto. "Thank you so much" I all but sobbed out as I hugged Naruto closer to my body. The animals grunted and it sounded like a your welcome.

Third POV - a few minutes before

The rest of team 10 watched as their friend was led into the circle of animals that had seemed impenetrable just moments before. They were all confused as to why the bear stopped and let him in, it just didn't sit right with them, especially Asuma who thought of Shikamaru as a son and would be devastated if anything were to happen to him on his watch. Then as the circle closed again they heard a choked sob escape their teammates mouth before rapid footsteps and a thump as he fell to the ground and more sobs escaped him. They wanted desperately to see what was making the usually calm boy lose his cool like this but they were to afraid of being mauled by bears to move forward. Then out of no where they heard Shikamaru exclaim a very passionate thank you and the animals seemed to know what he was talking about and grunted.

They were about to call out to Shikamaru when he hadn't spoken in a while but then he said, "I want you all to head back to the village I'll be back in a few days" "WHAT?! you can't expect us to just leave you in a forest full of wild beasts Shikamaru! It's ridiculous" Ino all but screamed. The animals didn't seem to mind being called wild beasts but Shikamaru didn't like it so he decided to voice those thoughts "Ino! They are not wild beasts they are intelligent animals that protected something very dear to me! I need you to go back to the village and leave me here, the animals will not hurt me, I'm sure of it." She huffed but didn't say anything else so Asuma just said they would leave and tell lady Tsunade not to worry.

Once the animals were sure they had left they turned to Shikamaru and nodded to the left again saying to follow them, so he picked up Naruto once again but this time he almost dropped him in shock. He was sure he had felt something akin to wings growing out of his friends back. He decided to just roll with it as there was nothing he could do until Naruto woke up anyway.

The animals had led him to a clearing in the woods and Shikamaru quickly figured out that his winged friend must be the one all the rumors were based on. He just sighed and chuckled. At first he was slightly annoyed that they were chosen to go on this mission but after all that happened he was very glad he had not gone through with his idea of asking for another team to go.

So Shikamaru is gonna be a hard character for me to write just because he's so smart and I obviously don't have an IQ over 200 like he does, but I'm gonna try my best. I got a little stuck on the beginning of this chapter so I'm very sorry about the rough start.  But I hope you guys enjoyed this chapter

(P.S. - I'm thinking about starting another fanfiction on Naruto but this time based on weres, it's not gonna be very accurate or anything because I don't know anything about them but I saw another person try it and I want to as well. The fics name is "when going to extremes" it was a really get story and I know I'm not really big enough to ask yet, but I would really like if you went and checked it out I enjoyed it a lot, and if I do start a were story I will be drawing heavy inspiration from that one)
