I started working at The Butterfly Haven this spring to save money for college. Having experience working in a job related to my environmental science degree program would give me some well needed extra credit. I had chosen a butterfly sanctuary because of their beauty and their sole purpose in the reproduction of plants. Plus, I'm too afraid of working with bees.
The first couple of weeks were pretty easy. There were only three large groups to visit the first two weeks, then only small groups of people, five at the most, who visited daily. Other than maintaining the butterfly green houses, I also provided mini tours for visitors who wanted more in-depth information about the butterflies and their habitat.
On my third week of work, I noticed a tall handsome guy wondering the habitats alone. He looked familiar, like I had seen him before, but where?
Strangely, the same guy came back again a couple days later, and again a couple more days later. It seemed that he was returning every other day. And on those days, I found myself following him around. I don't know why, but he seemed so gentle and kind; just so innocent. His facial expression was always content with his surroundings.

Most of the summer continued on like this. He would arrive early in the morning and I would do my tasks according to areas he visited. I couldn't help it, I found him intriguing. But why was I so shy to talk to him? I didn't even know his name? Maybe I should find out before the season ended. Maybe we could be friends since he love butterflies as much as I do.

I decided that I was going to try approaching him the next time he came to the Butterfly Haven. First I was going to start by wearing my nicest casual work clothes. If I can feel confident, then I'll be confident. Second, I was important to take deep breath, particularly because the plan was just to say hi and ask his name. Why was my head making such a big deal about it?

The day finally came and I was ready to interact and leave a good first impression with him. I really wanted to be his friend. Hopefully I don't get tongue-tied.
Walking into the main building of the butterfly farm and already I feel nervous. I go behind the counter to start the day, when our first visitor of the day walks in.
It's him!! Smiling from ear to ear, he walks straight for the counter.
"Hi! I'm Jungguk! And I want....um....I want...to uh...." He stops talking. His eyes become wide and he seems frozen, like he's in a trance. I feel confused and a little uncomfortable. What has happened?
"Hi....Jungguk. I'm y/n. What is it that you need?" I wait, hoping he'll snap out of it.
"Uh...." He quickly grabs our broacher, flipping to page about birthday parties. "A party!" He slams the broacher on the counter, pointing at the most expensive package.
"Are you sure?" I raise one brow at him. I don't believe he actually wanted to schedule a party.
"Yes! Here!" He swiftly takes out a credit card, shoving it in my hand. "For the soonest. Thanks."
"Okay.." I charge his card and let him know that his saved date was for next Tuesday.
**
Tuesday comes and I arrange everything for Jungguk's party. I'm hoping that he's invited people. It might be a little awkward if it's just him.
Surprisingly, Jungguk arrives twenty minutes late....and alone. My coworker brings him to the habitat where I am waiting to host the party. He walks in sheepishly carrying a gift wrapped in bright paper, with a big golden bow on top.
I wave him over to the table to show him the cake. Maybe more people were arriving soon. His bright smile showed me that he was very happy to be here. I smile too.
"Hi Jungguk, I'm glad you could make it. Will anyone else be coming?" I try to sound casual. Maybe a little part of me didn't want anyone else to come. Maybe I wanted to spend this time alone with him.
"Um, no, actually." He takes a deep breath and holds out the present. "This is for you."
"For me? Really?" A little bewildered, I take the gift and gently open it. Inside was a book, the complete encyclopedia on butterflies.
"I hope you like it. I actually wanted to ask you out last week, but I panicked and well....here we are." His bashful grin was contagious. "Do you want some cake, y/n?" I nod, hiding my blushed cheeks behind the book.
Best fake birthday party ever.
