"Where's Lissy?" I asked. "Is she coming?"
My mom looked uncomfortable. "David..." her eyes welled up with tears, "Lissy was killed. In the crash."
"W-what?"
My stomach lurched, and then I was filled with anger. I screamed and ripped out my cannula and I.V. I got up, pushed past all of them, and ran out.
And I kept running. I didn't care that I was in a hospital gown, I had to get out. I ran out of the room, out of the hospital, but without a constant flow if pain meds, I collapsed in the parking lot.
I woke up.
Where am I?Then I realized where I was. I was back in my room. And Lissy was dead.
Dead
Dead
Dead.My mom filled me in, apparently Lissy had lost a lot of blood, and she was panicking. She died on the ambulance. The only thing that stood out to me was that, as the EMT'S were carrying her onto a gurney, She wouldn't let go of the picture I had given her in the car.
I had given her a picture of a dragon, and she held on to it as she was dying.
She's gone.
Maybe if I had swapped seats with her she wouldn't be dead.
Maybe if she'd just calmed down and left the picture she wouldn't be dead.
The picture was mine.
IT WAS ALL MY FAULT."I don't want to talk to any of you right now. Can I be left alone?"
My mom gave a worried smile. "Sure sweetie. We'll come visit again in a bit."
I sat there. And I looked my hand over.
The last thing I gave Lissy was a drawing. And now I can't draw. My only talent died with my older sister in a friggin plane crash.
I laughed bitterly. I spoke to myself out loud. "I'm useless now."

A knock came at the door. My doctor walked in, "Hey there Davey."
"It's David. Only my siblings..."
I started over. You can only say siblings if you have more than one. "Only my little brother calls me that."
"Alright David. I have some good news for you." He smiled. "You're going home tomorrow!"
Tomorrow? I'm going to be at home without my big sister. She's not coming home. Ever. We're downsized. It won't be home if I don't have my whole family to be with.
I gave him a weak smile. "G-great." I said, in a voice that hinted that it was anything but great.
