Hazel Eyes

Sunday rolled around to ruin a perfectly good weekend like usual, my mom came to wake me at 5 am sharp, no matter how many Sunday's I woke up this early, I never got used to it.

"Elise dear we have to hurry today, we are welcoming a new family at church today" she explained, turning on my bedroom lamp. I sighed, sitting up and rubbed my eyes. She left me to get dressed, I dressed in simple jeans, a plain white shirt with my purple oversized sweater.

I sat at my vanity, taming my messy head of hair, putting on the usual, mascara, lip gloss. Not too much, mom would freak if she ever saw me in eyeliner.

I joined my parents downstairs, Montez was crying at my mother to hurry with his food. Such a spoiled kitty, I walked over and scooped him up in my arms.

"You're such a handful Montez." I said, kissing him in the side of his face. He wriggled from my grasp as my mom set his dish down. Greedy cat loves food more than his own family.

The sun was still asleep, the sky had a collection of stars I gazed upon as we climbed in the car. The stained glass of the church was lit from the inside like an intricate lantern, Father Thomas was in his usual spot when we walked in. He looked up to smile at us all, his bible rested on his lap, somehow twice as annotated as last week.

Today's chore, Dusting and cleaning. I wasn't sure if I'd prefer this over folding like 100 little sermon sheets. Regardless, I went on my way with a bottle of windex and a duster, wiping little coating of dust off alter ornaments and shelves never touched. I listened to the choir warm up as they all had arrived, I hummed along.

It had been a grueling task, but just before service at 7:30, I'd cleaned the place up. I looked over the now, much less dusty church with pride. Jordan grabbed my shoulders, making me jump. I turned and scolded him, swatting his arm.

"Good job El, this is the prettiest I've actually ever seen the stain glass" he told me, looking around himself. I smiled, easily forgiving him with that compliment.

"Yeah, we have new members joining today so mom thought the place could use some cleaning" I explained, he looked at me now interested.

"Any info? A cute girl I can heart break maybe?" Jordan asked, wiggling his eyebrows playfully. I laughed, rolling my eyes as we walked to our usual seat. We watched as people all communed over near the front, looks like they arrived.

Jordan and I watched from our seats, waiting for the crowd to break and to finally see these new members. A shorter woman walked through with her son, a taller guy, tattoos covered him heavily.

He looked over catching my gaze, I felt my face go a bit red. I looked away, chewing my lip a bit.

"Damn, don't think I can charm him" Jordan joked, looking over to me. I rolled my eyes, smiling at his dumb comment.

"There's a delta nu party today remember? You can go breaking hearts there" I said, he lit up, clearly he had forgotten about it. He did a small little dance in his seat, making me laugh even more. We quieted down as church service started, Jordan went and spaced out like usual.

I took the time to look around, mostly admiring the handiwork of how clean the church looked, not to sound full of it, but I did a damn good job. My eyes wandered down, catching a familiar pair of hazel eyes. It was the new guy, when he saw me looking back, he smiled.

I could feel my face heat up, looking away quickly. I could feel his eyes on me, I quietly slipped from the pew, making my way quickly to the hall. I slipped into the bathroom, looking at myself in the mirror.

"You handle that cocky Quinn everyday, you can deal with a cute boy staring at you" I mumbled to myself, slapping my cheeks lightly. My phone buzzed, and I pulled it out
