Lia's thoughts were interrupted by her mother's voice from below her. She quickly descended the stairs as she stared at her phone, waiting for Chaeryeong's daily morning text.
"Are you ready for school? Have everything packed?" "Yup." Lia responded, not looking up from her phone. She took a quick bite of her breakfast and speed-walked towards the door.
"Jisu, be back by six thirty. Curfew, remember?" Lia paused. "I remember. I'll be fine, eomma. I'll see you later!" "Have fun!" Lia's mother shouted as she watched her exit the house.
Lia took her phone from her pocket when she heard it ring.

——Chaeryeong: good morning :)
Lia: morning ^^
Lia: you ready?? i'm coming to pick you guys upChaeryeong: yup
Chaeryeong: Ryu and i are just waiting for you now >:)Lia: ok ok geez
Lia: i'll be there in a few minutes——
Lia was about to get into her car when she noticed her neighbour, Yeji, watering her flowers. Unfortunately, though, it just so happened that that same girl was the girl that Lia had feelings for ever since the sixth grade. Big cliche, huh? Lia's crush just so happens to be her neighbour. Oh, well. She tries her best not to think about it.
The sun's rays were strong that morning, and they shone right towards Yeji's front lawn. They also made her eyes sparkle beautifully, like every star in the universe was compressed into them.
Lia snapped herself from her trance by shaking her head and quickly opened her car's door.
Jesus, i'm doing it again. Can't you just stop being hopelessly in love for one second?
Lia aggressively pulled her seatbelt over her chest. It got stuck several times, further frustrating her.
"God..damn it..!" She whispered under her breath.
Yeji watched Lia pull out of her driveway as she smiled, having noticed how the younger girl was staring at her just a moment before out of the corner of her eye.
Lia drove for another ten minutes, along the same exact route she had been taking every single week day for a year. She neared Chaeryeong's house and saw she and her girlfriend, Ryujin, talking and laughing together on the sidewalk. She pulled over, unlocked the doors, and honked the horn a single time.
"Hey!" "Hey, Lia unnie, you're finally here! What took you so long? I know you're slow, but geez." Ryujin teased as she opened the door. "Hey, i don't have to drive you guys. You should consider yourselves lucky." "Yeah, yeah, whatever." Ryujin and Chaeryeong slid into the back seat of Lia's car and took off their bags.
Chaeryeong chuckled and poked her head between the front seats. "We still have to pick up Yuna, remember?" "Yeah, yeah. seatbelts on." Lia said in an annoyed tone as she backed out.
She turned on the radio and drove off as the chatter in the car grew.
In the backseat, Ryujin listened patiently as Chaeryeong explained a strange dream she had the previous night. "It was like...i put in the wrong contacts or something like that, right? And i was stumbling around this kind of...cave...and then, I wake up." "That's it?" Lia asked from the front of the car. "Yeah. What do you think it means, though?" "Ah, babe, maybe it's something you're not seeing clearly." Ryujin piped up. "Well, what could it be that i'm not seeing?" Lia looked out the window, trying to avoid eye contact. "No idea."
Lia came to a rolling stop in front of Yuna's house. they watched as she hopped down the stairs, her bag bouncing beside her.
"Hey, losers!" Yuna said jokingly as she slid into the front passenger seat and placed her bag down. "Good morning to you, too, Yuna-ya." Lia said as she drove away, towards their high school, and put on music from her phone.
Lia sighed. "Alright, do we want anything?" "Boba! Boba! Boba!" Yuna chanted. Ryujin and Chaeryeong glanced at each other and then joined in. "Boba! Boba! Boba!" "Alright, alright. Looks like we're taking a detour."
Lia drove off once again.
"Ryuddaeng, how's Yeji? I know she's been getting made fun of again." Chaeryeong asked out of the blue. It took everything Lia had to not respond and keep her focus on the directions of her route. "It's been okay for her, I guess. Your crappy friends keep calling her the d-word, though." "You know they're not our friends. We're just on the same cheerleading team." Ryujin sighed. "Right."
Lia tried as hard as she could to pay no mind to the conversation taking place in the back of her car, but she couldn't help making a sour expression at the thought of her crush being bullied. Not only was it an emotionally tense scenario because she had feelings for Yeji, but it was also sensitive because even though nobody knew, those little homophobic remarks and stupid "jokes" had always hurt her.
To know that those were the things that people thought about her identity was like learning that her dog had just been run over. It was just gross, sad. Her stomach twisted and turned just thinking about some of the things that have happened to people her own age that had come out before her.
In fact, around two years ago, she heard a rumor about Yeji's coming out. She found out that Yeji had been outed by one of her former "friends". Ever since, she's been getting tortured by a daily barrage of homophobic slurs and jokes from almost everyone. most notably, the so-called popular girls, otherwise known as Lia's teammates.
But i'm different, aren't i? I mean, I...I'm not huge assholes like them. I mean...I'm not. Right?
