"𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐓𝐎𝐃𝐀𝐘?"
-Ghostbur asked his son, Fundy. Fundy stopped walking when he heard him from behind. Fundy turned around slowly, "Doing pretty good!" Fundy replies and continues walking down the pier. Ghostbur hurried over to Fundy's side to walk with him. The sounds of the crashing waves was pleasant, it was a nice day too which made the ocean shine in glory. Ghostbur loved the smell of the salty water around him, it reminded him of his childhood friend Niki, who he had not seen in awhile. Ghostbur started to remember little memories from when him and Niki would duel by the beach, getting sand in our eyes as we aimed our swords at each other and getting soaked every time we pushed each other into the cold water. Ghostbur smiled at the thought of these old memories, Fundy seemed to notice, "Haven't seen you smile in a while," Fundy says. Ghostbur realizes that he was daydreaming and immediately tries to focus on the world around him, "Really?" Ghostbur questions the fox, still taking in the lovely scenery. Fundy nods his head slightly, "You used to smile a lot, but a little after your death, you kinda just stopped." Ghostbur stares at Fundy with a puzzled look, "And what's that supposed to mean?" Ghostbur asks. Fundy lowers his head when he realizes what he had said. "So what happened to mom?" Fundy asks quickly likes he's trying to change the topic to keep the truth from his father. Ghostbur brushes it off and starts talking about the new subject. "I'm not sure what happened to Sally, she's probably dead.." Ghostbur says timidly, not remembering too much about Sally, "Why do you ask?"
"Eret asked me about it the other day."
"Eret, huh?"
"Something wrong?"
"No no, not at all!" Ghostbur says, waving his hands in front of Fundy. Fundy sighs, breeze making his fur dance. The next few seconds are full of silence, it was a comfortable silence, just the two of them, father and son, gazing upon the seemingly endless ocean. "Are you busy at all?" Fundy asks the ghost, breaking the silence. "Not at all, I have lots of time on my hands now," Ghostbur laughs. Fundy awkwardly grins, "Alrighty then," the two reach the end of the dock, "Sit for a little while with me," Fundy demands. The orange fox sits at the edge of the dock, boots slightly in the water. Ghostbur follows the action but doesn't really sit, more like very slightly phasing through the wooden planks underneath him, trying to make it look like he's sitting. Fundy opens his mouth to speak but is interrupted by Ghostbur, "How are you and Dream?" Ghostbur asks out of the blue. Fundy decides to wait a little while to say what was on his mind, "Oh," Fundy says, putting his hand on his neck nervously, "Well we got engaged, but I think he cheated on me with George so I don't really know what's happening between us now, we haven't really talked about it lately. Or well, we haven't really talked recently," Fundy explains, "After yo- uh," Fundy tries to collect his words carefully without saying too much. "Take your time if it's hard to explain," Ghostbur comforts him. Fundy smiles and continues, "Well after everything with Technoblade, Dream has been more on his side and I rarely see him." Ghostbur nods, trying to take in every word Fundy had said to understand the situation a little better. Ghostbur attempts to pat Fundy on the head but his hand phased right through him, earning a cold shiver from the fox. "Sorry," Ghostbur says, but they both end up laughing it off.
"Oh yes, I have something to tell you, Wil," Fundy says. The atmosphere now feels different. "What's up?" Ghostbur smiles, placing his hands on his chin and his elbows on his knees. "How do I say this? Well I-um, I'm getting adopted," Fundy stutters. Ghostbur's eyes widen in shock, "You're getting adopted?" Ghostbur repeats his words. Fundy nods his head slowly. "By who? W-why? Fundy?" Ghostbur floats up, now in a standing up position, he looks down at Fundy. "I'm getting adopted by Eret," Fundy announces as kind as possible but to Ghostbur, it feels like another stab in the heart. "But we don't like Eret! It's in that song, remember?" Ghostbur says in a hurt and convincing tone, trying to act like he remembers the song when he doesn't. "A lot of things happened before you died, it's best for me if I have an actual alive dad," Fundy barks. The fox stands up to meet eye to eye with the dead man. "A lot happened, I know. From what I have gathered, I wasn't a good person before death," Ghostbur cries out, hands tightly gripping his own shoulders in distress, "But Eret wasn't all that great too? So why?" Ghosbur says out loud, wanting to cry but no tears would form. "You have no alive guardian, who's gonna sign the papers for you?" Ghostbur asks him quietly, trying to find any excuse to make Fundy stay. "Phil is gonna do it," the fox quickly replies. "Wait!" The ghost protested, "He's not your legal guardian, so h-he can't do it." Ghostbur smiles in relief, he had found a hole in Fundy's plan, however the grin faded as Fundy spoke again, "The president let us do it, he has control over the law in the country."
Fundy turns and walks off into the distance, Ghostbur could hear his cold, harsh voice trailing off, "If you wanna argue, take it up with Phil." Ghostbur sat there, still in shock. His own son hated him and was gonna get adopted by the man who almost killed him and his friends to become king. He was a mess of emotions, sad, shocked and angry. Ghostbur aggressively sighs, floating higher in the air until he was above some rooftops. He slowly made his way over to where he thought Phil would be, and he was right. The old fellow was by the water well, fishing out a bucket from inside. Ghostbur appeared before him, gaining a small jump from the blonde. "Oh, Wil!" Phil said, trying to calm himself down, "You scared me buddy," he laughs. Slowly opening his eyes, Phil could now see the fury in Ghostbur's blank stare. Phil cocked an eyebrow and tilted his head, "Something wrong?" Ghostbur nodded his head immediately, "Are you signing Fundy's adoption papers, Phil?" Phil turned his attention back towards the well but was still listening to what Ghostbur was saying, "Yeah," Phil whispered, finally pulling the bucket out of the well and carefully placed it down, trying not to spill the icy cold water onto himself. Ghostbur tensed up, "Was a bad father?" Phil looks at his son worryingly, Phil took a deep breathe, ready to explain what was coming next, "Most of the time no, but there was a point where you went off the tracks," Philza explained. Ghostbur nodded his head anxiously, "Okay, but why Eret?" Ghostbur pleaded. "Well Eret is a good man and I trust him, he volunteered to take Fundy in too," Phil rambles, "He may have had some bad memories during the first war, but it's all over now." Phil blinks, but when he opens his eyes, Ghostbur had disappeared. Phil quickly looked around but it was useless, Ghostbur had vanished. He was actually right in front of Phil still, he just decided to hide his presence, to have time to take in the new information.
Quickly flying over the nation like an eagle, he stopped at Eret's museum where Eret was, adding more historical things to the museum. "Eret," Ghostbur says coldly. Eret turned around to meet the ghost but nobody was there, however he could feel Ghostbur's spirit nearby. "Ghostbur?" Eret requested an answer. Ghostbur appeared before Eret and nodded his head slowly. "Hey man! How are you?" Eret said in a friendly voice, but never earned an answer. "Enough with the small talk, I'm only here to innterrogate you," Ghostbur said, unemotionally. Eret filled with his shades, "Go on."
"Why do you think Fundy needs to be adopted? Am I not enough?" Ghostbur raised his voice. "I'll keep this short, I just need the poor fella needs an alive father, and I've always been close with him," Eret decided to explain in more detail, "During the first war, you've always just kept Fundy in the background, ignoring your own son. And before your death, you completely changed. You've had a big effect on Fundy's life, it's not a good thing, Wilbur. I'm trying to help him, that's all!" Eret added, before leaving and getting back to putting things together. Ghostbur felt broken, they've all told him that he was a bad person. So what the hell did he do? It made no sense.
