Rubatosis (n.) The unsettling awareness of your own heartbeat.

POV: ???

..........

I set my pen down beside my small note, letting out a tired exhale. The Victorian lamp's yellow tint shone enticingly against the metal of my pen's cap, bathing it in a halo of ephemeral wonder and false promises in an act of mercy to distract me from the recent incident. I sat at the edge of my seat precariously, attempting to take in what was happening at the moment.

I take a sip from my coffee, steam waving out from the beverage, careening heedlessly into the rest of the environment, fading out. Setting the drink down, I look behind me, my room showered in darkness, with 2 others sleeping quietly, the only illuminance coming from the candle by the bedside and the lamp beside me.

October 5, 1927: 12:01 AM.

I have no fucking idea what this is anymore-

I just need sleep really. Well not really-- I just get bored at night playing with the paint on the wall. It doesn't peel well.. I wish I had like a phone, maybe? The coffee I have at the moment tastes a little funny, but perhaps that is the way it is made by the staff. That's all for tonight. What day are we even on still? I don't know anymore, I just hope for the best.

---

I look at my watch, glinting impeccably against the lamp's light.

12:04 AM.

I feel my mouth oddly excrete more saliva, and I feel my heartbeat come into range of my hearing. It's racing, fast. Faster than usual.

What's this? What's happening?

My breaths became short, and my head felt as if it were pierced by a pike, the headache coming in seconds.

W-what the fuck?!

I slam my hand onto the table, which was shaking violently, other hand clutching my chest in a desperate struggle to earn more breaths in.  My mouth starts to foam as I slowly fall to the ground, vision blurring, and black patches eating at it by the minute.

My head comes in contact with the carpeted floor, tears falling out from the brims of my eyes, giving a miserable, burning sensation as I watch my world fade into nothingness.

Just a void.
