-You don't sing? -Niall asked Casey in the Music class on Wednesday.
Casey bit her lip and looked down. She didn't want to lie to Niall, but it was best for him to not know a lot about her life.
-No. Actually, I don't like it because I'm not good at singing -she was partially telling the truth. She sucked at singing, but she did like it. Although she had stopped doing it after "he" passed away.
-I don't believe you. I'm sure you have a beautiful voice.
-Don't be so sure... -she answered.
Niall was quite nervous. Yesterday, he had decided, with the agreement and support from the boys, that he was going to invite Casey to the dance. It was difficult to picture her with a dress and make-up that wasn't black liner, with her hair done and all girly. Except he wasn't asking for that, he just wished she said yes to have a good night and a laugh with her and his friends.
But once she was in front of him, he froze and all the ideas and plans he had to ask her out left his brain. His mind went blank and the only thing he could come up with was to say something about singing.
Suddenly, an idea came to his mind. It was something very risky, and a little foolish and he knew Casey was not going to like it, however, he had to do it. It was now or never.
He got up from his chair earning Casey's confused glare. Just like before, his classmates observed every movement he made. That made Niall even more uncomfortable.
-Niall, what the hell are you doing? -Casey asked when she saw him grabbing a guitar he got from the pile in a corner of the classroom. The music teacher was absent that day which meant they had a free hour. Some of the peers were chit-chatting and others were doing homework they had behind.
As Niall was so nervous he decided to invite her by doing something that was relaxing for him, and playing the guitar was something very soothing that cleared his mind and put his feelings into words.
Casey, terrorized by what he was going to do, opened her eyes wide and stammered a few unintelligible words. She couldn't allow Niall to play the instrument, it would remind her of "him" more than necessary.
He sat right in front of her and started to play. It was a beautiful and slow melody, everyone listening said it was romantic but melancholic.
To Casey, it was similar to vomit, or at least that's what she wanted to do when he started singing, harmonizing words and phrases which formed one of the most amazing songs she had ever heard.
The room was silent, the only thing you could hear was Niall's sweet voice and the soft guitar strumming.
Without anyone noticing, he changed the lyrics:
-... And her ocean eyes; and her golden smile... Casey Whitmore, would you be my date for the dance? -Niall couldn't dare to say anything else and just kept playing the guitar for a few more seconds.
-No -she uttered plainly. Niall couldn't understand. He stopped playing and put the guitar aside.
-Say that again?
-I said NO. I won't go to that stupid dance. It's all bollocks. So you wasted your time doing...that -she gestured with her hand. The bell rang and their classmates got on their feet and got out, ready to talk about what had happened. The new gossip: Niall Horan liked Casey.
Casey grabbed her bag and was about to head for her next class when Niall grabbed her by the arm.
-Casey, everybody left now... you can answer me truthfully... -this was worse than he could ever imagine. Asking Casey out was the hardest thing he did in his life.
