I was about thirteen years old when I woke up alone on the beach. I had absolutely no idea where I was. I remembered being in a big white room and having a bunch of needles stuck into me. I wasn't sure why, but the memory made me start to cry. My tears hit the sand and were washed away by the sea. The second the water touched my tears I stopped crying and had the sudden urge to swim as fast and as far away as I could. I didn't care what my mind was screaming at me, I ran out to the water as fast as my legs would carry me. I dove under and felt a wave of calm dull all my fears and worries. I loved swimming. I had always felt my most calm in the water.

I suddenly felt extremely tired and had absolutely no energy to keep swimming. I flipped on my back and floated, waiting to regain energy to swim back to the shore. I started to fall asleep and as I did, I thought I heard some far-off voice singing.

I woke up in a strange cave surrounded by even stranger women. I didn't know why, but they all felt strangely familiar somehow.

"Who are you people?" I asked with a worried tone. They all exchanged looks that told me I was missing something.

I didn't know wha tot do when I heard her talk. Her voice was put me in a trance, and I was aware that I was being moved, but I just kept hearing her voice inside my head. I was gently submerged in water and instinctivly held my breath. When we had been under for a while, I wondered why I hadn't felt the need for air yet. I looked around at the women, and they were moving back and forth in an odd motion I hadn't seen before. The woman who had talked to me was holding my hnd like she had known me all my life. I decided that she was nice, and I liked her. I looked over and froze. She didn't have any feet! She and all the other women had tails!

I thought to myself, How did I not notice this? That's when I looked at my feet and saw something that made me shake with fear. At somepoint that I wasn't aware of, my feet had turned into a tail. Then I connected the dots. They were mermaids!

And I was one,too.
