The team looks over at the now seemingly-dying Kailyn, having no clue what just happened. Morgan rushes over in a panic, alongside Reid, still trembling after his little emotional dam crack. He wanted to help, but his brain was so clouded that all he could do was stare.
"Aaron, let me take over," Rossi says frantically, as he begins to put his hands on her chest.
"NO! I- I promised her everything would be fine... Tha-that the plane would land safely in-"
"Guys... I think we need..." Reid said softly. It almost went unheard, but JJ responded to him, a bit frantic. But I mean, who wouldn't be?
"What, Reid? C'mon, spit it out, we're running out of time."
"STOP COMPRESSIONS! I-I NEED TO LISTEN TO HER HEART" Reid finally spits out something relatively sounding like English as he runs towards Kailyn.
"WHAT? Are you out of your mind, Kid? She'll die if we stop!" Morgan snaps back
"Morgan, just trust me on this. For once, just trust me" Reid says as he pushes past Morgan and drops to his hands and knees, laying his head on Kailyn's chest. Her breathing had restarted. Her breaths were shallow and quick, but she was breathing. Her heart rate was up to about 158 based on his calculations. After his very quick assessment, he began yelling at people to bring him things. He knew what he had to do.
"Spencer, I need you to tell me what's going on. Do you know how to help?" Hotch asks a very frantic Reid.
"A few months ago, I did a bunch of research on heart conditions and problems, and the one I researched the most is a Cardiac Tamponade- thanks. Uh, it's a buildup of pericardial fluid in the sac surrounding the heart that puts an immense amount of pressure on the heart, causing an inability to fill up properly. In a perfect world, she'd be rushed into surgery to perform a pericardiocentesis, but since we're unable to do that, we have to- thank you- adapt and overcome. I read an article about this group of doctors in Seattle who got into a plane crash a little over two years ago and they performed the same procedure out in the field."
"Reid, those were DOCTORS! They knew what they were doing!"
"Technically no they didn't since they didn't have any real equipment. They were in the same boat as us. And by the way, I've done enough research on this. I know what I'm doing, Hotch."
The team surrounded Reid, who was now ripping Kailyn's shirt off and prepping her chest. He gets everything ready around him, and pours hand sanitizer all over them- the scalpel that came in the emergency medical bag that Strauss requires the team to leave on the plane (in case something like this happened), and the tube part of the hand sanitizer bottle (where the liquid comes up through). This was exactly what they used in the Seattle case. Just as he was about to slice her chest open, he stopped for a split second, before applying pressure to the blade in his hand.
TW- DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOOD AND SURGERY
Blood immediately began to flow out of the wound Reid had just created. JJ poured a bit of hand sanitizer on it in an attempt to stop infections, but she knew it wouldn't do much. When she winced in pain, Reid knew this would work. This has to work. It'll work, she'll be fine he consoled himself quickly before continuing on with the procedure. As he was steadying the tube, the deadly silence was finally broken-
"Reid, c'mon man, you're gonna kill her. You're untraine-"
"Morgan PLEASE SHUT UP. If you want her to live I need absolute silence so I can focus" Reid snapped. He was tired of people doubting him for so long.
Reid again got the tube in position and began to push it in. Kailyn was squirming around, while JJ was trying her best to keep her still. She held her shoulders down against the ground, which helped immensely. Reid felt the tube stop, and he pushed again- hard. He felt a jolt, but no blood. He felt the team's panicked looks as he went to push again, and this time, blood came shooting out through the tube. I did it he thought quickly, but his thoughts were quickly pushed aside when he heard Kailyn's screams. After a second or two she calmed down, and her breathing began to steady. Reid put a ZipLoc bag around the tube, and zipped it shut, holding it in place. A wave of relief crashed against the team when they heard Kailyn's voice, soft and raspy-
"Wh- what happened?"
A/N- woah. bit of an intense chapter. i know it's SUPER similar to the Grey's episode, but i promise after this there won't be any direct medical issues being pulled from the episode. anyways, i hope y'all enjoyed, feel free to vote and comment <3
