Stale air greeted his nose as he walked down the narrow hallway towards the stairs.  This place was obviously in need of much repair; the walls had all but completely peeled, mold had eaten away at much of the carpeting, and water damage was still visible from the most recent fire.

Jimmy climbed the stairs to the third floor.  3A was on the left a few doors down from the stairwell.  This was routine by now.  He took a final glance down the corridor, saw no one, and then kicked the door off its hinge.  James was there in the kitchen preparing dinner.  When James saw Jimmy standing in the doorway over his once intact door he threw the pan of frying fish at Jimmy and bolted for the rear window.

Jimmy ducked under the pan, but a piece of fish struck the sleeve of his jacket, leaving a greasy patch on the gray stitching.  He pulled the gun from inside his jacket as he rose and shot three rounds in James' direction.  The chase had begun.  Jimmy was used to this part.

James pushed open the cracked frame of his rear window and climbed through to the fire escape.  As he was reaching the first floor, shots rained down as his pursuer aimed from through the window.  He turned and sprinted towards the end of the street.  The gunman was already following him down the fire escape.

Jimmy sprinted down the street after his target.  The chase spanned across several blocks as the fleeing man attempted to elude him.  Jimmy raised his weapon again and fired.

James took a hard left into the park as a shot ricocheted past him and through a car window.  The car alarm wailed behind him as he hurdled a bench and navigated through the various bars and slides children typically played on.  Glancing over his shoulder, he saw his pursuer still keeping pace.

Jimmy stumbled over an uneven patch beside one of the sandpits.  This man was not going to be the first to escape.  Jimmy stopped abruptly beneath the basketball goal, exhaled sharply, and fired.

As James exited the park gate he ran towards the subway entrance.  A sharp pain jolted through his hip and his legs became wobbly.  He fell to the ground outside the subway entrance and began pulling himself with his forearms the final few yards to the subway stairs.  His hand reached the edge of the stairwell just as a heavy shoe struck him in the side of the head.

James rolled over onto his back as his mind faded away into darkness.  A dark silhouette stood over him as consciousness left him.
