Chapter 5

Every day after school and during the weekends, Gon would practice his skills. He mainly focused on smell, hearing, and how to conceal his presence. Gon's smelling was already pretty great, he would practice smelling by getting anything his hands could get. He wanted to familiarize the smells of the world as best he can. His guardians stopped him after he found a cigarette bud on the floor.

For hearing, Gon would meditate and focus on his soundings. He would do this everywhere. Sometimes he spaces out for too long and Midoriya would need to tap his shoulder. When it comes to hiding his presence, he would tell Kōki to search for him. The first few times Gon got caught but eventually, he got the hang of it.

Gon made sure to see if it worked by playing hide and seek with Midoriya. To his surprise, he hid his presence so well that the entire class had to look for him. He was hiding in a tree that Midoriya and other students checked five times. Gon got extra homework for making the whole class worry that day.

Today the class was doing track and field. Gon stretched on the outskirts of the track, next to Midoriya. Midoriya fiddled around, trembling at the sight of his opponents. Bakugo jogged in place, an arrogant smile on his face, and a challenging glare directed to his classmates. Gon placed a hand on Midoriya's shoulder, giving him a thumbs up.

"No worries Izuku, I know you'll do great!" Gon encouraged. Midoriya flustered up at his words, mumbling a quick thank you. The two boys went to join the rest of the class on the track. Mr. Kaetsu instructed the class about the activity. He mentioned that the activity was meant to measure their skills, and that it was not a competition. Even with that being said, the teacher also added that the student who finished the three laps first got chocolates as an award.

The students got into their running positions, Gon with his left leg bent and right arm forward, Izuku who was frozen in place, and Bakugo with his hands in front of him. When the teacher blew the whistle, the students ran off. Some kids sprinting, others jogging, and a few pretending to run. At the front of the students were Bakugo and Gon. Gon was jogging at a constant pace, trying to take his time. Bakugo on the other hand, was trying to beat everyone in speed.

"I bet I can beat you!" Bakugo loudly taunted Gon. He tried to conserve his energy for running, so he tried not to shout.
"The teacher said not to compete." Gon responded while observing his challenger. Bakugo wasn't really sweaty, which surprised him because of his quirk.

Despite what Gon said, Bakugo dashed ahead with a determined gleam in his eyes. Gon stared blankly at Bakugo who was picking up speed and barely sweating! 'Maybe I should try harder? If I get first place I'll give the chocolate to Killua,' Gon thought. With the thought of his plushie in his mind, Gon started to pick up his speed. He just needed to finish the three laps first, so it should be easy, right?

The students looked ahead at Bakugo and Gon. Then they gave up, falling onto their knees and then onto their backs. The teacher shook his head, sighing as he wrote scores down on his clipboard. A few kids stayed on the track, not wanting to move.

Minutes passed, and kids were starting to trip on their legs, bumping into each other, and Midoriya even landing face-first onto the ground. 'Note to self, ask Izuku if the ground tastes like rubber and gum.' Gon was extremely curious if it tasted like it smelled. Bakugo was still running, Gon being close behind him. Gon's legs felt weak, every so often he felt like dropping onto the floor and melting into a puddle of his sweat. He couldn't keep up with Bakugo, and for some reason, it really ticked him off.
