As the door flew open, my dad about to step into the house, it suddenly slammed back close. I felt a presence behind me, and turned to see Damien, with one hand secured on the door frame and the other on my back, a very serious expression on his face. We couldn't be more then an inch apart, he leaned over me as he pressed his hand tightly against the door. Just looking at him, I could tell he was extremely strong, as he was able to keep my father out, with just one hand.
I looked up into his eyes, and he returned the gesture, his eyes were so blue, they almost looked green. I was getting lost in them, until he spoke, with a dead serious tone. "Madeline, I don't know what kind of twisted, sick game your father is playing, but I do know one thing I can assure you of. Whatever show he just put on for you is not LOVE." He sounded so sure, how could he be so sure, I wanted to be mad at him, I wanted to push him away and open the door out of spite, but I was out of my father's trance all of a sudden. I don't know how he did it, but he just pulled me out from under a spell I've been trying to break for 23 years. The spell of my father's words, and the effect they had on me.
I turned back to the door, finally myself again, finally realising the stupid mistake I was about to make. Damien still held the door, with just one hand, and dad was struggling greatly just to be able to bypass his strength. Damien slid the latch back into place and removed his palm, removing all his weight from the door.
"Madeline, what's wrong?" Dad sounded like he was panicking, and no trace of sadness, remorse or tears could be found in his voice. He really was the best actor ever.
"I thought you were coming to open the do.....". Dad was cut off by Damien.
"Good morning, Mr corvette" he said, his voice deeper than ever. He was still leaning over me and I was still admiring his eyes. How could a man be so beautiful. I looked at his outfit, he was in a grey muscle shirt, he seemed to be obsessed with those, and grey tattered jeans. His blonde hair, as usual was in a ponytail. I knew it was stupid and insensitive to be noticing those things at a time like this, but I couldn't help it. Damien had earned my ogling.
"What, Madeline? Is that a man's voice, what's a man doing here? Open this door right now, or I swear I'll break it down." He was aggressive again, a move that didn't surprise me very much. Dad was incapable of being gentle, I'd known he would return to his normal temperamental self.
"With all due respect sir, I would advise you not to do that" Damien said, and I was terrified by how calm his tone was, he wasn't scared at all. His hand came to grasp mine on the door handle, like he was offering me moral support.
"What? Who are you to tell me what I can and can't do to my own daughter. Madeline! Madeline!! You ingrate, stupid, ungrateful snob. Is this how you treat your father, huh? Is this how I raised you? You bitch! Open this door right now" he was fuming, and his tone was scaring me shitless, and to think I almost opened the door for this monster. Damien really had saved me.
"Sorry sir, but that won't be happening". Damien was still calm, none of my father's drama had fazed him. I got the feeling that it would be hard for anything to faze him. He spoke calmly and with way too much composure for someone in his current situation. "Now, sir. You have two options, leave gently and never show your face here again, or break down the door. Just so you know, if you do, then I'll be legally authorised to use force as it'll be considered self defence". He began to roll up the sleeves of his shirt with his one free hand, and when I saw the look in his eyes, fear that was one times stronger that the one I had for my father struck me. Dad was strong for a man his age, but Damien was a teenager, one that ate healthy and did actual excercise. He would literally pulverise my father.
"I suggest you pick the first option, and I'll inform you that I am armed" Damien and I both knew he wasn't armed at all, but that wasn't the point. His hand was still holding mine, and my body was still pressed against his on the door. I could feel his heartbeat on my chest, and I was shocked at how steady it was. Mine was jumping through the roof, he really wasn't scared at all.
"You bastard! Who the hell are you to talk to me like that! And Lara, you crazy bitch! You're gonna let this prick talk to me like this. Madeline, Madeline come out now!!!!" Dad continued to yell, but even he, didn't dare to hit the door again, fearing the consequences of Damien's threat.
"Make a choice, Mr Corvette, which is it gonna be? I personally hope you break the door, been losing some exercise lately" Damien was crazy, how was he so calm? How was he handling this situation better than three older adults who were supposed to be more mature than he was. It only made my admiration for him grow even more.
"I'll be back, you Bastard! I'll get you then". Dad said, before kicking the door one last time and storming off.
We waited until we heard his car retreat from the street, and finally broke our embrace. Damien released my hand from his, his signature smirk back on his handsome face.
"Tada" he said, way too calm for someone who just faced what we just did. He had literally saved my life. I was thankful.
