It was approaching late evening, we stood in Headmaster Hargreaves office. He had taken his seat behind a large wooden desk filled with paperwork and other weird artifacts, the one that stood out the most took the shape of a small glass dove, it was beautiful."Aziya, I'm sure you probably have a lot of questions," Hargreaves' voice plunged through an uncomfortable silence.
Aziya nods.
Amrin moved around the room, glancing at Aziya expectantly, waiting for her to say something...anything.
Aziya took a seat in front of Headmaster Hargreaves, she looked to her mother, then back to the man in front of her.
"Can you hear my thoughts?" she asked.
"I can," he responds.
"How?" she pried.
"The same way you can pinpoint people's strengths and weaknesses." He looked at her with a glimmer of humor in his eyes. Aziya wasn't amused in the slightest.
"Anybody can do that." she states
"No," her mother chimes in, "Not anybody can do that, my dear." she sighs, before taking the seat across from her daughter.
"You are gifted beyond measure my dear, you hold so much power, the average supernatural could only dream of possessing." she finishes, her eyes gleaming with admiration.
Aziya was baffled, "Average supernatural?" her eyes fell to her lap, lost in her own mind, she couldn't understand, she believed she was normal, that everyone could do what she was able to. That's why she didn't open up to people, she didn't talk and always kept her expressions neutral. Only to find out she wasn't.
"You've only brushed the surface of your ability Aziya?" Hargreaves said, now standing "A whole new world awaits you," he bent down now looking into her eyes.
"Why am I just knowing this?" she looks at them, her expression as cold as her tone.
"The council.." Amrin said, looking as if she was about to cry.
Aziya grimaced internally "Oh no, please don't"
Recognizing Aziya's discomfort, Hargreaves makes his way over to Amrin, resting a comforting hand on Amrin's shoulder urging her to continue.
"When you were born Aziya, they threatened to take you away, they saw you as a threat to their kind, you were born of a human, me and your father.." she trails off, "..I wasn't sure what he was."
"What I'm trying to say is, I don't know much, they told me if I wanted to keep you alive I had to make sure you lived a regular human childhood." she huffs " But it was so evident that there was nothing regular or human about you my love." she brought her hand to the coils on her head. "You were years above all your classes, you held such a deep connection with nature, humans and animals alike as if you could speak with them, and I, I told you it was all normal."
"If I wasn't supposed to know, why would you bring me here? To this school?" Aziya peered at her mother.
"Because, it is time for your abilities to be tested." Hargreaves rose from his position alongside Amrin and slowly walked towards Aziya. "The council wants to know how much of a threat you could be, the council wants to do to you, what you've been doing to every lifeform you've encountered." he comes to halt in front of Aziya.
They want to know my strengths and weaknesses....
~
Two days later, Aziya is at school, her classes are lightwork and apparently the majority of her teachers are supernatural as were some of the students. Hiding in plain sight amongst humans. The human teachers hadn't the slightest inkling and the students are just as oblivious. Aziya made notice that super naturals tend to be social outcasts, the weirdos, to the humans. A bunch of misunderstood teens.
The feeling, he's here, but where? Just as she thought, there he was, arm draped around a brunette, he leaned down to nip at her ear, causing her to burst into a fit of giggles. She hadn't noticed how long she was staring until he blew a kiss towards her. She coughed, tearing her gaze away from them.
What was that?
The feeling began intensifying, goosebumps rose all over her body "Is he coming closer?" she refused to look behind her person. She kept her gaze ahead at the chalkboard in front of her.
"You know, You're a bit weird," Carlyle said into Aziya's ear, a bit too close for her own comfort.
Aziya slightly pulls away, while he takes the seat beside her. She turns to face him, raising her right eyebrow.... I'm weird?
"You always keep to yourself, you don't talk to the other weirdos," he chuckles "..a lone weirdo," he laughs.
Aziya kept her face expressionless " What does that make you?" she asks.
He immediately stopped laughing, all humor leaving his face "I'm different," he concludes.
"Are you?" Aziya asked, her demeanor shifts to one of...humors??
Carlyle scoffs "Yes, yes I am"
"You did a good job convincing your human friends," she gestures to the group of students laughing rather loudly in the back of the class, "But I, Carlyle, I see right through you." her eyes met his, she stays put ignoring the burning feeling in the pit of her stomach.
Carlyle knew of Aziya's abilities, in fact most super naturals knew, they also knew her history, well as much as she did but it was enough to raise caution. But, Aziya was lying, she didn't know anything about the young man in front of her, it scared her. She had trouble deciphering his abstract attributes, it was like a block of some sort. Nevertheless, she wasn't gonna let him know that, not until she knew why. Nothing basic psychology can't fix.
Carlyle didn't bother saying anything more, instead he got up causing the chair to screech beneath him, with a glare directed towards Aziya, he left.
Aziya found herself staring at his retreating figure, a foreign feeling greets her conscience but she ignores it.
She reached into her bag, taking out the book she had gotten from Headmaster Hargreaves. Her fingers trailed over the gold writing on the matte black hard covering of the book. She opened it, skimming through the first few pages. It was about Supernatural niche, it spoke of the different types, ranks, powers and lifestyle of these creatures.
"Hey stranger," Aziya rose her head to look at Audrey, who stood bouncing slightly on the balls of her feet. Aziya looked at the smiling girl before returning her gaze to her books.
Audrey, shakes off Aziya's passiveness and takes the seat beside her, tapping slightly on the desk in front of her. "So.." she begins, "How do you like the school so far?" Audrey asked, her hand came up to support her chin as she stared at Aziya excitedly.
Aziya continued reading, not sparing a glance to Audrey, she couldn't do small talk.
"You don't have to be so mean, you could at least tell me your name," Audrey said with a huff, grabbing her bag as she prepared to leave.
"Aziya," said Aziya, nose still tucked between the pages of the book. Audrey smiled, and with a nod, she left the classroom.
Aziya watched as she left, silently commending her for attempting to be a friend, not even the supernatural had the guts to.
