«What's the most absolute craziest thing that you've ever done? » he asks. I swear that sometimes he acts exactly like a child. What kind of question is that?

«I don't know, I'm not the type to explore and go on adventures. All I've ever done until I met you was follow the rules».

«You're telling me that you can kill my apple with just a few words but you've never done something exciting? I don't believe you, sorry».

I giggle hearing his ridiculous statement. «Apples can't be killed! I decomposed it»

He shrugs. «You know what I meant. Anyway, tell me some crazy shit you've done, come on! »

I look at him with a serious face and start to talk. «Once, during a full moon, a few witches of the coven and I decided to summon the devil. We hid in the middle of a field, we created a circle and we started to recite some dark spells. Then we made a sacrifice. It was just a creepy man that tried to get into the pants of one of the girls of the coven, so no one who mattered. We cut his throat and ended the ritual. We didn't see the devil, but we definitely sensed an obscure presence between us»

Shawn is petrified. Colors have completely left his face and I think he's about to faint. I see him gulping while he tries to find something to say. His reaction is hilarious, and I can't stop myself from laughing my ass off. «Shawn, I was kidding! I've never even killed an animal! I don't practice dark magic, it's too dangerous and too... dark. And I definitely never tried to summon the devil! »

He breaths out and bring a hand on his chest. «You're insane! Were you trying to kill me? Damn it, my heart is racing, I might have a heart attack». I seriously can't stop laughing and my stomach begins to hurt. While he recovers from the fright, I see him smiling as he glances at me. I lay my head on the grass and relax a bit to calm myself. He does the same as me and we lay on the ground together side by side. The moment our eyes met, I feel the need to connect our lips, but there's no way I'm gonna do it.

«You have a sweet laugh. I love listening to it» he says casually.

I blush like I've never done in my life. What the hell is he saying?! I don't know how to reply and I don't want things to get weird so I blurt out the first question that comes to my mind just to stop the upcoming awkward silence. «What about you? Have you ever done something exciting? »

He hesitates a bit and I feel his demeanor change. «Not really. I'm a simple guy with a normal life. I'm pretty boring too, so it's very unlikely for me to have the chance to do something exciting».

I frown at his words. «How can you say that? You're not boring, in fact you're one of the most intriguing people I've ever met». He shakes his head as to belittling my words, so I sit up and fix my gaze with his. «Are you trying to deny it? » I challenge him crossing my arms.

«We barely met, you can't say things like that.  You don't know me, Mila, and I'm telling you that I'm not that interesting».

«Well, you could have said it earlier, I wouldn't have wasted my time with you. You literally begged me to be your friend, and now I found out you're not worth it. I guess I should just go home». My harsh words are soaked in sarcasm and I wait for a reaction from him, but he just lay there in silence. «Shawn, look at me» I order. «Do you really think I would have let some common guy get away with knowing that I'm a witch and then become his friend, if I thought he was boring? »

He shrugs and I'm about to lose my patience. «No, the answer is no! It's true, I've just met you, but you are pretty easy to read. You're kind and friendly, a little shy and weird, but in a cute way. I know you're smart just by how you talk. You're curious and observing, I'm not surprised you like to read. And that it's only on the surface, so I'm certain there's a lot more about you».

He bites his lips to conceal his rising smile. «You really know how to compliment someone, don't you? »

«What can I say, I have a lot of talents».

We spend the rest of the day joking around, and time seems to fly by. When the sun begins to set, Shawn stands up. «I have to go».

I look at him with pleading eyes. «Already? Can't you stay a little bit more? »

He shakes his head, his curls bouncing at the movement. «Sorry, but if I skip dinner my grandad will know for sure that I'm not alone. Besides, my father is pretty strict when it comes to etiquette and he'll get mad if I come home late»

It's the first time that he mentions his father, and I catch a trace of bitterness behind his words. I'll ask about it later. «Can you sneak out tonight? » I insist. I don't want to go back home right now and, for the first time in my life, I also don't want to be alone.

«I think I can arrange something. Where to? »

«I'll wait for you at the end of the street, I want to show you something».

He nods and then walk away, stealing some glances as he leaves me behind. When I'm alone, I just sit there, look at the river that shines under the pink sky and wait for the night to come.
