"Alright, class! Today you will be paired up with one of your classmates for a class project." Everyone whispered excitedly as they ran over to their friends, giddy at the thought of "working" (goofing off) together. I hate partner and group work. I always end up alone or get paired up with some random person. Then people never do their work and I always end up doing the whole assignment by myself. It's so frustrating!
"Quiet down everyone. You will not be choosing your partners."
"Awww man."
"Come onnnnnn!"
"Are you kidding me?"
People started to complain around the room, exponentially growing in volume and bitterness. My teacher was quick to quell their bellyaching.
"Listen up everyone!" he yelled which made the class go quiet. "The partners you will be working with is the person who is sitting beside you. I don't want to hear any complaints. For the assignment, I want all of you to make a poem that you think expresses your emotions or someone else's emotions.
"We get to be partners together! YAY!" Cole said, beaming with delight. Ugh. Why do I have such bad luck today? As I was internally crying and annoyed I said
"You better do some of the work."
"Of course! Let's do our best together!" said happy little puppy Cole with his shiny blue eyes. Sheesh, he is way too happy. Someone help me please. T^T.
"Whatever," I said, looking away in an attempt to hide my reddening face. I have been defeated once again *sigh*.
"There is an hour left of class so use this time wisely to work on your assignment with your partner," my teacher said. The classrooms were once again filled with chatter. Pretty much everyone just went on their phones and hung out rather than actually getting any work done. People always leave it to the last minute. It's so annoying. I took out my notebook and flipped to a new, fresh page so I could start on the assignment.
"Oh, you're already going to work on it? Let's work on it together!" said Cole.
"Um okay then," I said, surprised that he was going to work on the assignment as well. "What do you want the poem to be about?" I asked Cole.
"I am fine with whatever you want" He looked at me with a clueless face.
"Well there is a topic I want to write about but I don't think you will be comfortable with it," I said.
"What is it?" said Cole
"I kind of like to write about...sad stuff..." My voice trailed off thinking that Cole would think I am stupid or weird.
"I love to write sad poems! Wait that sounded weird." Cole laughed
"Really?! That's unexpected." I said, slightly surprised.
"I know I know. Everyone says that." He giggled. "Shall we start now?" I nodded and we started to talk about poems in general and our favourite poems. I didn't realize until the bell rang that we wasted a whole hour talking! Ding! DIng! The bell signalled that it was time to leave and people started to run out of the classroom.
"Oh shoot! Sorry for wasting your time. We didn't even get anything done." Said Cole, looking regretful.
"It's okay. At least we know what topic we want to write about." I said. I felt sullen at the fact that we didn't start the assignment, but the conversation I had with Cole wasn't so bad. Why am I thinking like this? He really is messing my mind up. I placed all of my belongings into my backpack and I got up ready to go.
"Hey, Amelia! Before you go, do you have Snapchat? I want to add you... Just for our assignment. We do need to communicate to finish the assignment right?" Cole said with a reassuring smile.
Cole knew that I wouldn't add him If it were just for fun, so he added the assignment part. Well isn't he smart?
"I will add you but only for school purposes," I said, feeling irked that I was actually going to add him on Snapchat. To be honest, I didn't have any friends on Snapchat except my parents. It felt quite weird to only have my parents added on Snapchat. But it felt even weirder to just now start adding other people.
"You really don't mind adding me? Thank you!" exclaimed Cole. He was literally jumping out of happiness and excitement. He is a really weird kid. I don't even understand him myself. We exchanged our Snapchat usernames and that's when our conversation started to sail.
