Chapter 5

Valt's P.O.V.

"Mom... where are we going?"

"To the hospital."

I knew this had something to do with Shu. Toko and Nika weren't coming, which they would have done if it was our family.

Mom dropped me off in front of the hospital. "Be back before six. If you can't, send me a text."

I entered the hospital, anticipation filling me. Had Shu gotten worse? Had he gotten better? Thoughts flew through my head as I entered.

"Valt Aoi?" one of the doctors asked. I nodded nervously. "Come this way." The doctor led me to Shu's room.

"Can he come in?" the doctor asked over the intercom. "Who?" Shu asked. "Valt?"

"Shu?" I asked. "Can I come in?" "No," Shu answered firmly. "I don't know why your mom brought you here, but you can't come in."

"What is it?" I demanded. "Nothing," Shu muttered.

"It's something," I said. "You always let me in."

Shu sighed in exasperation. "Fine, come in. Use the normal chair."

The moment I walked in, I could see Shu was sick. His face was pale and his hair pushed to the side, revealing the scar. His eyes were closed.

"Hi Valt." Shu's voice had a rasping sound I hadn't heard over the intercom. "How was your day?"

"Are you okay?" I asked. Shu nodded. "Fine."

I didn't believe him. He looked so pale and when I touched him, he felt strangely feverish.

"Are you sick?" I demanded. "No?" Shu tried.

I laughed slightly. "You're never going to admit to anything, are you?" Shu grinned weakly. "What do you think, Valt?"

"What is it? The flu?" Shu didn't give any indication he heard me. "Yes," the doctor confirmed from outside. "A particularly serious case."

My eyes widened. "And you didn't tell me?" I practically shouted. "Mrs. Aoi told you,' he pointed out. "Yeah, she did," I agreed.

"And don't worry, it isn't as bad as last time—" Shu cut himself off.

"Shu... you've never gotten really sick before this, right?" "Well, there was that flu bug two—" "Years ago. I remember. But is the answer no?" Shu nodded.

"Then why did you say last time?"
