Valt's P.O.V.

If I hadn't been so distracted, I would have noticed the car.

But I was thinking about the Blader practicing at midnight. Who in their right mind would practice at midnight?

Shu.

He was stuck in the hospital, but I knew he would go to no measure to keep practicing. Maybe he already could go home, I thought hopefully. It had been two weeks since I last visited the hospital.

On the way to school, I made a mental to-do list. I was so engrossed in figuring out what to do that day that I barely noticed the black car hurtling across the street.

"Valt!" Honcho screamed from behind me. He grabbed my arm, but not before the car tires grazed my foot.

"OW!" I collapsed, my right foot incapacitated by pain. "Valt." Honcho was shaking me. "You okay?"

"Mhm..." My voice slurred. Darkness was eating away at the edges of my mind. "Goodnight," I mumbled.

And I blacked out.

When I woke, I was lying on a bed, surrounded by bright, fluorescent lights. "Mhm..." I seemed to have lost the ability to speak.

Hungry, my brain went. "Mom?" I managed to mumble. "Beybread..." I slipped back into unconsciousness.

The next time I woke for good. Shu was talking to Mom in the corner of the room. Mom smiled when she saw me awake. "Hungry?" she guessed, reading my mind. I nodded enthusiastically. "Yes please!" Mom handed me some Beybread, which I munched on happily.

"He can be dispatched today," the nurse said. "Just make sure he keeps the cast on."

Shu stayed silent, but he unlatched the door and slipped out. I was watching him, though. I grabbed my phone from Mom.

>Shu

i'm coming to your home :Valt

yeah i know you got dispatched :Valt

don't argue :Valt

Shu: Sure.

Shu: Do whatever you want.

Shu: After lunch.

I didn't get another message from him after that. After learning how to walk with the cast, I hobbled out of the hospital and towards Shu's home.

I knocked on the door. "Shu!"

My friend opened the door. "Hi Valt." He looked exhausted. "Come in."

I plopped down on the couch and stared at him. "Why are you going out in the middle of the night to practice Beyblade?"

"Who said I was practicing?" Shu defended. "I thought you would so I watched you last night," I lied. I didn't need him worrying about my safety.

Shu sighed. "Is this why you decided to come? To confront me about something or another?" I crossed my arms. "Yeah. Now, are you going to answer my question?"

"I can go out if I want to," Shu answered. I rolled my eyes. "You know what I mean." "Fine! I spent so much time stuck in the hospital I had to practice."

"Are you supposed to be practicing?" I demanded. Then I noticed something I wouldn't have normally. Maybe because I was really worried about Shu, or maybe I had just nearly crashed into a car and was alert, or maybe I had my own accident. It was probably a combination of the three.

I could see a small bulge beneath his shirt in the area of his right shoulder. I glanced down at my foot to make sure, but afterwards, I had no doubt. It was a cast.

"Your shoulder is still injured."

Shu looked like he was about to protest. So I clasped Shu's hand and stared at him pleadingly. Shu only laughed. Please let this work.

"I'm fine," he said. "Let me see," I demanded. He flinched and stepped backwards. "AHA!" I shouted. "Now let me see, or else."

I lifted the sleeve of Shu's shirt. This time, he didn't dodge. Underneath, was a gray cast covering his shoulder. "It's nothing," Shu reassured me. "The doctor said to put it on because of the operation."

"Really?" "Really." He glanced at the clock. "You better go home now, or Ms. Aoi will freak out again."

It was 5:30. Shu was right. I smiled and waved at him. "See you at school on Monday!" Presuming I don't catch you practicing again.

As I left, I could feel someone staring at me. I turned back, but there was no one there. Whatever. Maybe Shu watching me leave.

But to be careful, I ran all the way home.
